ECC Partners with Metro to Offer Student U-Pass; Students, Employees, and the Public May Also Purchase TAP Cards
Transportation passes offer a hassle-free alternative to get around town for the holidays!
El Camino College partnered with Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) to offer students a new way to get around the South Bay. Metro’s Universal College Student Transit Pass (U-Pass), was introduced this fall semester, offering students significant savings and access to a variety of transportation options.
The U-Pass is available for purchase in the Bookstore, where students, employees, and the public can also purchase and/or reload TAP Cards for public transportation travel throughout Los Angeles County. These transportation passes offer a hassle-free alternative to driving during the holiday season, offering passengers a chance to skip the traffic on the way to shopping and attending events and social gatherings.
El Camino College student Kevin Fernandez said the U-Pass has allowed him to get to campus quickly and efficiently.
“I purchased the U-Pass because it is convenient to take to and from school and I save money,” said Kevin, who rides Metro three or four times each day. “It helps me get around and it costs much less than what I usually spend on bus fare. It’s a great way to go.”
Using the U-Pass is easy; students who purchase a U-Pass receive a smart-chip sticker that turns their student ID into a transit pass. It's not too late for students to take advantage of this great offer! U-Pass fees are prorated, so participants only pay for the time frame they need.
The ECC Bookstore is now an authorized Metro vendor, open to the college community and the public. TAP cards are reusable public transportation passes that allow the owner to add “stored value” (money) and a variety of passes for travel across 24 area transit agencies. No more fumbling for change or carrying cash! ECC students and employees, as well as members of the public, are welcome to visit the Bookstore during business hours for TAP card-related purchases.
The discounted Metro U-Pass is also available at the ECC Bookstore. Students enrolled in at least six units may purchase a U-Pass through January 2018. U-Pass holders are able to take unlimited rides on Metro, including Metro Express Buses and the Metro Silver Line, as well as GTrans (Gardena bus lines) and Torrance Transit from now until the beginning of the spring 2018 semester.
The Metro U-Pass provides nearly 70 percent in savings, compared to a Metro 30-Day Pass with Zones. The additional bonus of unlimited rides on GTrans and Torrance Transit makes the U-Pass an especially good value. Students can also use their financial aid disbursements to purchase a Metro U-Pass.
Metro offers 170 bus routes in 1,433 square miles, with 15,967 stops available. By participating in public transportation programs, individuals can help reduce harmful emissions and commuter traffic on city streets.
