El Camino College Art Gallery to Present “Centrifugal Force”

September 26, 2017

The El Camino College Art Gallery will present “Centrifugal Force,” an exhibition of stunning new paintings, sculptural tops and a performance video by artist and magician, Tom Jenkins. The exhibit runs Oct. 9-Nov. 2, with a reception scheduled for 7-9 p.m. Oct. 12 and a gallery walk-through with the artist set for 1 p.m. Oct. 17.

Jenkins’ recent large-scale abstractions in graphite, oil and acrylic on canvas are simultaneously mechanical and organic, whimsical and sublime.

Using mysterious handmade mechanical devices, Jenkins creates evocative patterns, shapes, dots and lines that are unique and without subjective intent. Some of the tools employed in these works are as simple as a stick with string, while others are complex creations made with an assortment of wheels and gears. Also on view are sizable steel tops, hand turned by the artist, and a sculptural steam pipe that resembles a medieval alchemical apparatus.

The artist hopes that viewers will ponder how these amazing works are devised and engage their own creative imaginations in the process.

The El Camino College Art Gallery is located on campus, 16007 Crenshaw Boulevard, Torrance and is open 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays and from noon-8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays.
