El Camino College to Present Choral Performances to Celebrate the Season

A variety of choral performances will be presented this fall, featuring highlights of student work and holiday themes.

The South Bay Children’s Choir will perform popular holiday selections at 4 p.m. Dec. 8 in Marsee Auditorium. The four SBCC ensembles will present “Holidays in Harmony 2019,” showcasing favorite seasonal music, in addition to beloved classics. The South Bay Children's Choir is an auditioned group of more than 100 talented young singers ages 6 to 18. Co-founded in 1996 by Artistic Director Diane Simons and the late Dr. Jane Hardester, the choir is known for its beautiful tone and expressive singing. Tickets for the holiday performance range from $6-$18 and may be purchased online at www.centerforthearts.org using the online ticketing system or by phone at 800-832-ARTS. Next, the El Camino College Concert Choir, Mixed Chorus and Chorale will raise their voices together for a “Holiday Choral Extravaganza” set for 7 p.m. Dec. 8 in the Campus Theatre. The choral department will ring in the season with sounds of celebration in song through this multi-group collaboration. The first half will begin with a major work, and the second half will feature each choral group performing favorite holiday music. “Holiday Choral Extravaganza” is directed by professor Joanna Medawar Nachef, ECC’s director of choral activities. The annual fall Opera Workshop is scheduled at 8 p.m. Dec. 12 in the Campus Theatre. El Camino College’s preeminent singer-actor ensemble will perform scenes from the musicals of Stephen Sondheim, the oratorios of George Frideric Handel, and the operas of Mozart and Rossini. The fall finale is directed by ECC faculty member and Director of Vocal Studies Kevin Blickfeldt, also an accomplished performer and instructor. Founded in 2004 by the late Hedley Nosworthy, longtime ECC music professor, the Opera Workshop is intended to help aspiring opera students develop vocal, musical and dramatic skills through the research, rehearsal and performance of selected pieces.
