El Camino College to Present Summer Lineup of Entertaining Events

Spend summer nights at El Camino College! Enjoy entertaining events featuring music, dance and thought-provoking debates as part of the Center for the Arts’ 50th anniversary season.

Professors Francesca Bishop and Brittany Hubble will discuss the polarization of political discourse, its media representation, and its impact on critical thinking and logical reasoning. “Rhetoric 2019: Revolutionary Change or End of Reason?” is set for 7 p.m. July 9 in Marsee Auditorium. This presentation will also examine the policing of language and the repercussions of nonconformity while questioning whether the new prescription for expression helps or harms progress in American society. In “An Evening of Middle Eastern Dance,” ECC faculty member Karin Jensen and Mandala Danceworks return to Marsee Auditorium at 8 p.m. July 13 for an exciting night of dance. The performance features an all-star cast including Helena Vlahos, Fahtiem, Kamala Almanzar, Princess Farhana, Devilla and Sekhmet Dance Company, Sashi, Marjhani BellaMorte, Nilay Engin and Jen McDonald. Audience members will enjoy a variety of ethnic dance forms ranging from the traditional to the avant-garde. The performance “Songs of the People: Classical Folk Music From Around the World” features a musical trip full of delightful global compositions for violin and piano. Internationally acclaimed violinist Luanne Homzy joins ECC faculty member Valerie Stern for a program showcasing regional folk songs and dances from China, Romania, Argentina, Ireland, Spain, and the United States. An inspired assortment of familiar songs and spirituals are in the evening’s lineup, alongside dazzling virtuoso selections by composer Grigoraș Dinicu and evocative melodies by Joaquín Rodrigo. The performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. July 16 in the Campus Theatre.
