El Camino College to Present Vocal Performances for Spring

A variety of choral literature will be presented through excellent vocal performances this spring as part of the El Camino College Center for the Arts’ 50th anniversary season. 

The Joanna Medawar Nachef Singers will present an uplifting night of choral music with the concert “GOSPEL!” set for 7 p.m. May 19 in Marsee Auditorium. Directed by professor Nachef, ECC’s director of choral activities, the performance highlights the genre of spirituals/gospel music. The JMN Singers have received acclaim for their incomparable and soulful performances of this powerful and exhilarating music. The evening will include choral music from a cappella spirituals to accompanied gospel pieces of world-renowned composers/legends such as Hairston, McNeil, Hogan and Gibbs. Tickets for the concert are $10-$30 and may be purchased at www.centerforthearts.org using the online ticketing system or by phone at 800-832-ARTS. The El Camino College Concert Choir, Mixed Chorus and Chorale will join together to present a concert at 8 p.m. May 31 in Marsee Auditorium. In this special collaboration, each choral group from the ECC Choral Department will perform select numbers from the secular realm. The concert is directed by professor Joanna Medawar Nachef, ECC’s director of choral activities. El Camino College will present the annual spring Opera Workshop at 8 p.m. June 6 in the Campus Theatre. Featuring outstanding vocal students, the Opera Workshop will showcase scenes from popular operas, oratorios, operettas and musicals. The spring finale is directed by ECC faculty member Kevin Blickfeldt, also an accomplished performer and vocal instructor. Founded in 2004 by the late Hedley Nosworthy, longtime ECC music professor, the Opera Workshop is intended to help aspiring opera students develop vocal, musical and dramatic skills through the research, rehearsal and performance of the selected pieces. Students audition for the class and learn to master the ability to sing complex operatic works in English, Italian, French and German.
