El Camino College MESA|STEM Student Leaders Selected to Attend Conference

Networking and professional activities part of the conference dedicated to leadership development

Ten El Camino College students recently attended an invitation-only conference in downtown Los Angeles, taking a step toward becoming leaders of tomorrow’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce.

The annual Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Student Leadership Conference invited students and industry professionals from across the state and nation to explore the theme, “Illuminate. Motivate. Launch.”

El Camino College MESA|STEM students had the unique opportunity to interact one-on-one and in small groups with company executives, engineers and recruiters. Mock interviews, communications, team building, emotional intelligence and financial literacy workshops were also available to students at the conference.

The students represented more than 30 California universities and community colleges, such as UCLA, UC Berkeley and USC. El Camino College students in attendance included: Jose Jobel, physics; Anthony Omole, biochemistry; Naveene Raya, computer engineering; Jason Minera, physics; Jonathan King, mathematics; Sergio Ortiz, environmental science; Denise Gonzalez, microbiology; Cynthia Garcia, biology; Sandra Vazquez, chemical engineering; and Kristina Soriano, chemistry.

Both students and companies benefited from the conference; students networked and gained the skills needed to be well-rounded employees, and companies gained access to talented, diverse candidates for internships and employment.

This year’s conference partners and sponsors included: Edison International and Southern California Gas Company as top sponsors, as well as Pacific Gas and Electric, Applied Materials, ECMC Foundation and San Diego Gas and Electric. Other participating companies were AT&T, Blast Motion, CHC Consulting, Disney, Northrop Grumman, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Boeing, Oracle, Crane Aerospace & Electronics and Wells Fargo.

The El Camino College MESA|STEM program promotes success through mathematics, engineering and science academic enrichment. With tutoring and group study sessions, career and transfer advising,

mentoring, scholarship and research opportunities, as well as academic counseling and a study center, MESA|STEM provides an environment that allows students to succeed in mathematics, engineering and science and provides assistance in navigating the transfer process.
