Department Program Level Student Learning Outcomes

  

American Studies

1. In a written assignment, oral presentation or creative work, students will apply interdisciplinary methodologies to develop an original argument about American popular culture, and students will use those methods to prove the validity of their interpretation.

2. In class discussions and/or written assignments, students will recognize their own moral systems and use them to make ethical judgments about popular culture.

3. In an exam or written assignment, students will demonstrate an understanding of the diverse methodologies used to study and critique American popular culture.


Anthropology

1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the four-field approach in anthropology by outlining each field, identifying which aspects of the study of human beings each field addresses and providing two examples of specializations within each field.

 

2. Students will demonstrate and understanding of the stages of fieldwork used in the discipline of anthropology by identifying and describing each of the stages of fieldwork used in one of the four subfields.


Childhood Education

1. An intergrated Understanding of Children's Needs

Students integrate an understanding of the needs, characterisitics, and multiple influences on the development of children, ranging from birth to adolescence, as they relate to high-quality child care and early childhood education.

2. Designing Environments for Children

Students design, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate environments and activities that support play and positive learning outcomes for all children.

3. Effective Guidance and Interaction Strategies

Students apply effective guidance and interaction strategies that support all children's social and emotional development.

4. Developing Partnerships

Students develop strategies that promote partnerships between programs, teachers, families and their communities.

5. Ethics and Professionalism

Students demonstrate and/or evaluate ethical standards and professional behaviors that deepen an understanding, knowledge, and commitment to the early childhood education field.

6. Student Achievement

Students are earning Child Development Permits, Certificates of Achievement, and Associate in Arts Degrees, and are transferring to a four-year university to attain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Child Development or a related field.


Economics

1. Upon successful completion of the Economics major, students will be able to: Using tools of economic analysis, write an essay describing how resources are allocated and prices are determined in a market economy.


Education

1. Students will be able to design a lesson plan based upon the state's academic content standards.

2. During their fieldwork observations, students will be able to identify several of the California Standards for the teaching profession (CSTP's) that are most evident in the presentation being observed.

3. Students will be able to design and create a pre-professional portfolio as a basis for building the professional portfolio that they will later use to obtain their first teaching position.


Global Studies


History

1. Upon completion of their course of study in the History Department, students will be able to identify and explain major social, economic, political and cultural historical themes or patterns in an oral or written assignment. (Content)

2. Upon completion of their course of study in the History Department, students will be able to accurately identify a primary or secondary source relating to history and apply appropriate historical methods to explain what the source reveals about its historical context. (Sources)

3. Upon completion of their course of study in the History Department, students will be able to develop and persuasively argue an historical thesis in a written or oral assignment, effectively using primary and/or secondary source(s) as evidence to support their thesis. (Historical Argument)


Human Development

1. Students will identify, integrate and apply cognitive, psychological, social and physical factors influencing success in college and in life.

2. Students will demonstrate active learning, critical thinking and personal responsibility in determining outcomes for success in college.

3. Students will develop interdependence and employ strategies for establishing effective and supportive relationships within diverse college and community environments.


Liberal Studies

Philosophy

1. Students who have completed the Philosophy program will be able to analyze the logical structure of arguments and the rules of critical reasoning, as these apply to their own and others' writing and thinking.

2. Students who have completed the program in Philosophy will be able to recognize, analyze and assess the influential positions in the philosophical traditions; specifically in the areas of the theory of knowledge, the nature of reality, and value theory.

3. Students who have completed the program in Philosophy will develop the ability to critically analyze and apply philosophical theories to contemporary social and moral issues.


Political Science

1. Upon completion of their course of study in the Political Science Department, students will be able to identify and explain major economic, political, social, cultural and historical themes underlying contemporary issues in the policymaking process. This will be done by completing an oral or written assignment.

2.After completing their course of study within Political Science, students will be able to critically analyze different theories in a written or oral assignment, using primary and/or secondary sources in support of their arguments.

3. After completing their course of study in Political Science, students will be able to identify and distinguish various academic and journalistic sources, and explain what these reveal about contemporary political issues and policymaking. This will be done in a written and/or oral assignment.


Psychology

1. Upon successful completion of the Psychology major, students will be able to identify and use the logic and methodology of scientific inquiry to describe and explain mental processes and behavior.

2. Upon successful completion of the Psychology major, students will be able to demonstrate content-mastery of the fundamental principles of psychology.

3. Upon successful completion of the Psychology major, students will be able to apply psychological concepts and research to real-life phenomena.


Sociology

1. The Influence of Society on the Individual

Given a social scenario students will use primary and/or secondary sources to objectively analyze the influence of society on the individual.
