AMERICAN STUDIES
American Studies courses provide an interdisciplinary study of American life. These courses introduce students to a thematic framework of analysis of the American value system and popular culture.
American Studies 1 An Introduction to American Studies
3 units; 3 hours lecture Recommended Preparation: eligibility for English 1A Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC
This interdisciplinary course explores through a chronological and thematic study of cultural history and the evolving meaning of what it is to be an American. Students evaluate American experiences, that include novels, films, architecture, music, and art. The ways in which American literature impacts and reflects the national character and experience will also be discussed.
American Studies 3 The American Immigrant Experience
3 units; 3 hours lecture Recommended Preparation: eligibility for English 1A Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC
In this course students will be introduced to an interdisciplinary historical survey of immigrant groups in the United States. Issues of ethnic identity, cultural adjustment, and assimilation to American life will be addressed. The cultural contributions of immigrants to American society will also be examined.
American Studies 7 Introduction to American Popular Culture
3 units; 3 hours lecture Recommended Preparation: eligibility for English 1A Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC
This is a survey of American contemporary culture. This course examines the mirror of everyday life - popular culture. From regional leisure traditions to sophisticated, national technologies, we will search for how Americans have organized and added meaning to their lives through forms of popular expression. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, popular culture will be examined in relation to historical, political, social and cultural determinants that influence thought, values and behavior in society with particular emphasis on local culture.
