Education 10 CBEST Preparation in Reading
1 unit; 1 hour lecture Prerequisite: English 1A with a minimum grade of C Credit, degree applicable
This course is designed to assist students in reviewing and refining the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the reading section of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). Topics will include comprehension, critical analysis, and evaluation, as well as research and reference skills. Students will complete a practice test and develop a comprehensive plan to pass the official CBEST. Pertinent test taking strategies will also be explored. Note: Letter grade or CR/NCR option.
Education 20 CBEST Preparation in Writing
1 unit; 1 hour lecture Prerequisite: English 1A with a minimum grade of C Credit, degree applicable
This course is designed to assist students in reviewing and refining the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the writing section of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). Topics include using prewriting strategies, generating focused essays, developing and organizing supporting details, choosing appropriate words, creating structurally sound sentences and paragraphs, and effectively addressing essay prompts which require narration and analysis. Students will practice writing timed essays and will develop an individualized comprehensive plan for passing the official test. Pertinent test taking strategies will also be explored. Note: Letter grade or CR/NCR option.
Education 30 CBEST Preparation in Math
1 unit; 1 hour lecture Prerequisite: Mathematics 23 or Mathematics 25 with a minimum grade of C in prerequisite or qualification by testing (El Camino College Mathematics Placement Test) and assessment Credit, degree applicable
This course is designed to assist students in reviewing and refining the skills and knowledge necessary to pass the math section of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). Topics will include estimation, measurement, statistical principles, computation, problem solving, and numerical and graphical relationships. Students will complete a practice CBEST and develop a comprehensive plan to pass the official CBEST. Pertinent test taking strategies will also be explored. Note: Letter grade or CR/NCR option.
Education 101 Introduction to Teaching and Learning
1 unit; 1 hour lecture Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC
The course provides students with an overview of teaching in K-12 public schools. Course topics include subject area coursework, teacher preparation programs, credentialing, educational and technological resources for students and teachers, California state standards, diverse learners, contemporary classroom issues, qualities of effective teachers, and professional portfolios. Also, students will conduct classroom observations at area schools.
Education 201 Foundations in Education
3 units; 3 hour lecture Prerequisite: Education 101 with a minimum grade of C; eligibility for English 1A Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC
This course introduces students to the concepts and issues related to teaching kindergarten through grade twelve (K-12). Topics will include teaching as a career, contemporary educational issues, within historical, social, philosophical, legal, and political contexts, and teaching diverse student populations. Students will analyze the purposes and values of schools, the qualities of effective teachers, California's standards for teaching and learning, and the appropriate use of technology in the classroom. Throughout the course, students will develop a professional portfolio and will engage in 30 to 40 hours of structured fieldwork.
