This course is a chronological survey of American historical development from the first Americans to 1877. Focus is placed on the understanding of American social, intellectual, political, economic, and diplomatic institutions. The expansion of the young nation within the scope of war and diplomacy and the influence of culture and ethnicity in American history will also be discussed.
History 1B United States History from 1877 to the Present

This course is a chronological survey of American historical development from 1877 to the present. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of American social, intellectual, political, economic, and diplomatic institutions. Special topical consideration will be given to the nation’s culture and diversity. The emergence of the United States as a superpower is analyzed against the background of world history.

This course is a political, economic and social survey of the development of world civilizations from the origins of civilization in the Neolithic Revolution to the emergence of the West in the mid-fifteenth century.
History 4 History of Modern Civilization

This course is a political, economic and social survey of the development of world civilizations from the rise of the West in the mid-fifteenth century to the advent of the Global Age in the present day.

History 5A History of Early Britain

This course focuses on the political economic, social, and cultural development of Britain from earliest times to the 17th century. Topics include the emergence of common law and representative government from which Anglo-American civil liberties were derived. The course will also focus on the foundation of the British Empire as England began to evolve into a major power holding a central position in the world based upon maritime and commercial supremacy. Cultural development through the English Renaissance and Baroque periods will also be explored.
History 5B History of Modern Britain

This course focuses on the political, social and cultural development of Great Britain from the 17th century to the present. Topics include the expansion and decline of the British empire, the evolution of democratic institutions and political thought, the Industrial Revolution, the World Wars, and Britain’s relationship to the European community. Cultural development from the Neoclassical to the Victorian and contemporary periods also are examined.

History 8 History of California

This course is a survey of the history of California with an emphasis on the geographical, political, socio-economic and cultural development of the state. The role of ethnic minorities and women from pre-European times to the present will also be discussed.
History 9 History of the Indians of North America

This course surveys the history of the Indians of North America from their origins to the present. The development of representative societies of Mexico, the United States and Canada, and their relations with various European powers are examined, with primary focus on the Indians of the United States. Indian responses to the expansion of the United States in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the state of Indian tribes and nations in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries will be discussed.

History 12A Introduction to African History, Prehistory to 1885

This course is a survey of Africa from human evolution to the eve of colonial rule. Emphasis is given to the political, economic, and social development of the African continent. Topics to be analyzed include African trade relations with Europe and the world, the influences of Christianity and Islam in Africa, the Transatlantic slave trade, the African Diaspora, and early European incursions.
History 12B Introduction to African History, 1885 to the Present

This course is a survey of the political, economic, and social development of Africa from 1885 to the present. Special emphasis will be given to colonial conquest and African resistance to European rule, influence of Christian missionaries and Islam in Africa, the striving for independence and decolonization, and the struggle against apartheid in South Africa.

History 14A History of Asian Civilizations

This course focuses on the political, economic, social, and cultural development of Asian civilizations from earliest times to 1600. Emphasis will be placed on the experiences of India, China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia and their interactions. Topics include the emergence of the earliest Asian civilizations, the development of major religious and philosophical traditions, the rise of regional and imperial states, and the impact of early contacts with the West.

This course focuses on the political, economic, social, and cultural development of Asian civilizations from the 17th century to the present. Emphasis will be placed on the experiences of India, China, Japan, and Korea and their regional and global interactions. Topics include the impact of Western imperialism on these countries, the response to Western dominance and influence, and the emergence of these societies as modern nation-states. History 16A The African American in the United States, 1600 to 1877

This course is a survey of the development of the African American community from the colonial period to 1877. The course emphasizes historical, cultural, social, economic, and political facts as they relate to African American experience as well as the historical experience of the American society as a whole.

This course surveys United States history from the Chicano perspective and covers historical periods from the initial contact between European and indigenous North American societies through colonial, early national, and contemporary American historical periods. Emphasis is placed on this group’s contributions to the development of the United States. Factors that have shaped the formation of Mexican American society within the context of United States history will also be analyzed.
History 18A Women and American History from the Colonial Era to 1870

This course surveys the history of women in America from the Colonial Era to 1870. Through the exploration of American Womanhood, the course will focus on the realities of the public and personal lives of women as well as the efforts of women to broaden their scope of experience and autonomy. Consideration will also be given to concepts that best describe the historical position of women in society; women as history makers and interpreters of that history; and the contributions women have made to the development of American civilization.

This course surveys the political, social, cultural, and economic history of Mexico from Pre-Columbian times to the present. Discussion of major epochs of Mexican history will focus on the influence of various cultural groups in shaping modern Mexico.
History 22 Twentieth Century World History

The course examines the political, economic and social development of the world from the beginnings of World War I to the present. It focuses on the factors that contributed to the outbreak of World War I and World War II, issues that remained unresolved by their settlements, and new challenges introduced by these conflicts including the Cold War, decolonization and state building in Africa and Asia, the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), and the world’s increasing interdependence.

This course is a survey of the historical development of Germany from the time of unification in the mid-nineteenth century through the reunification of the post-Cold War period. This course will also consider the problems and historical patterns characterizing contemporary Germany.

This course surveys the political, social, and economic history of Los Angeles from its earliest settlement by Native Californians to the present. Topics will include environmental issues, urban development, race and ethnicity, the entertainment industry, and the media's portrayal of Los Angeles. Special emphasis is given to the expanding role of Los Angeles as a global city that serves as a destination for diverse immigrant populations and a center of international commerce.
