This course is a study of culture and its influence on an individual’s adjustment in society. It analyzes the biological and psychological influences in childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and later years. Practical approaches to problems of personal development and social relationships are discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the effects of personal interest and aptitudes on occupational goals, sex roles, human sexuality, friendship, and love.

The Psychology of Thinking

This course focuses on the psychological study of the nature of thinking. Its emphasis on the progressive development and refinement of critical thinking and writing skills. These skills are expressed through the reading and writing of analytic and argumentative essays. Principles are applied from such areas as psycho physiology, psycho linguistics, and cognitive psychology. The logic of the scientific method and the analysis of experimental designs are also addressed. The key components of arguments are studied as well as various forms of fallacies in reasoning. Formal logic is addressed in the form of categorical syllogisms and conditional logic.

This course is a survey of the scientific study of the behavioral and mental processes of organisms. This course emphasizes basic theory and research design, including experimental techniques. Extended discussion of the contribution of nature and nurture to the understanding of behavior and mental processes are conducted. Major topics include psychobiology, sensation and perception, learning and conditioning, cognitive psychology, motivation and emotion, personality theory, psychopathology and social psychology.

Physiological Psychology

This course focuses on the physiological foundation of human behavior. Brain behavior relations are explored in different aspects of functioning, including consciousness, language, emotion, sex, learning and memory, sensation and perception, movement, and motivation. Also covered are neurological and psychological disorders. Data from human and infrahuman studies are presented to illustrate the logic of the scientific method in uncovering the structure and functions of the nervous and endocrine systems as they relate to behavior.

Social Psychology

This course focuses on the scientific study of the individual within the group. Social Psychology deals with the psychological processes and interpersonal interactions in groups and between groups. The emphasis is on individual behavior rather than on the group as a unit. This course focuses on social perception, social cognition, the nature and assessment of attitudes, prejudice and discrimination, attraction, social influence, prosocial behavior, aggression, group processes, personality, gender and human sexuality.

Introduction to Elementary Statistical Methods for the Study of Behavior

This is a course in statistical methods and research design for the behavioral sciences. The course focuses on descriptive and inferential statistical techniques for summarizing research data and for making conclusions about the populations they represent. Students are introduced to the basic challenges and skills involved in successful undergraduate and graduate training in the behavioral sciences, including both reviewing and writing scientific research reports.

Experimental Methods in the Study of Behavior

This course continues the study of statisticalmethods and research design for the behavioral sciences. This course focuses on the application of the philosophy of science in general and the scientific method in particular. Students learn to design and conduct research, analyze data using descriptive and inferential statistics, and report results in the format of the American Psychological Association. Students are introduced to the basic challenges and skills involved in actively participating on a research team while conducting their own independent research projects.

An introduction to the scientific study of African Americans. This course emphasizes the psychological issues related to the African American experience in America. The focus is on how this experience shapes social perception, social cognition, racial identity and attitudes. This focus is further elaborated into individual cognitive styles, personality development and family structure.

Human Sexuality

Psychology 12 is the scientific study of human sexuality. The course approaches the study of sexuality from psychological, sociological, anthropological and biological theoretical frameworks. Topics stressed include the various definitions of sexuality; the history of sex; the scientific research methods used to study sex; the psychobiology of sex; sex and gender; sexual behavior and relationships; sexuality across the lifespan; and sex as a social and medical issue. This course also involves extended discussion on the relationship between human sexuality and human nature.

Abnormal Psychology

This course focuses on the various categories of psychopathology as well as the social criteria of "deviant" or "abnormal" behavior. The course covers the spectrum of psychopathology, from mildly maladaptive syndromes to severe psychotic reactions. Personality disorders, including sexually maladaptive behaviors, and behavioral dysfunction from childhood to old age are also included in the course content. This course is of value to students majoring in psychology and the other behavioral sciences. This course is also of value to paraprofessional trainees in such areas as administration of justice, nursing, and
community, health, and social services.

This course traces physical, cognitive and psychosocial development of the individual throughout the lifespan from conception to death. Introduction to the Psychology of Consciousness

This includes, but is not limited to, the areas of dream analysis, meditation, near death experiences, extrasensory perception (ESP), altered states and brain functions. Current research, theories, methods, and historical overview will be considered. In addition, other approaches to developing the mind from Eastern cultures such as Yoga, Zen Buddhism, and contemporary Sufism will be examined.

This course is a scientific study of the psychological factors associated with participation and performance in sport activities. Emphasis will be placed on how psychological principles and research can be used to understand and enhance sport performance. Topics will include historical and theoretical perspectives of sport psychology, research methods, and the relationship between sport performance and various personality, motivational, and social psychological variables. Gender and age issues, as well as the effects and management of unhealthy behaviors, will be discussed.
