About TEACH

The TEACH El Camino Teacher Education Program was created in response to California’s projected need for teachers over the next decade.  Through partnerships with local universities, TEACH offers courses and fieldwork for those planning to teach at all grade levels as well as for students interested in other careers within the field of education, including school administration, school counseling, school psychology, school social work, school librarian, school nurse, and speech/language pathology.  The TEACH program staff will direct students to appropriate academic support services available on campus and in the community and will assist students in defining, pursuing, and ultimately achieving their professional goals.

All students enrolled in TEACH El Camino will benefit from the following support services:

Ø  Transfer Agreements With Local Universities

By taking specific courses that have been articulated with a number of local universities, TEACH students can complete most (if not all) of their lower division major and general education course requirements prior to transfer via a guided pathway they will receive in their counseling appointments.

Ø  Teacher Resource Room

Located in ART B 313, this room is equipped with numerous teaching resources, including laminators, bookbinders, die cuts, children’s books, puppets, flannel stories, CDs, teacher resource books, computers, scanners, and more, some of which can be checked out for use at home or in the classroom.

Ø  Professional Support Staff

TEACH students will have the opportunity to take courses from dedicated professionals who bring to the classroom both their subject matter expertise and their experience as preschool, elementary, middle, and/or high school teachers.  In addition, TEACH has a full-time counselor who helps students develop education plans, select appropriate courses, find answers to specific credential questions, and access a variety of support services

Ø  Paraprofessional Experiences

TEACH assists students in locating paid TA positions by providing an updated list of local school districts, their telephone numbers, and their website addresses.  TEACH may also be able to provide paid TA positions via the Federal Work Study Program for qualified students.

Ø  Access to Campus and Community Resources

TEACH staff inform students of the services on campus and in the community that can help them achieve their goals.  Such services include Learning Communities courses and classes with Supplemental Instruction.  Learning Communities courses afford students the opportunity to take linked courses from instructors who collaborate weekly on course content and assignments, and classes with Supplemental Instruction provide students with additional tutorial support both in and out of class.

Ø  Fieldwork

If fieldwork is required by a student’s transfer university, TEACH students may be able to complete up to 45 hours of fieldwork while attending El Camino College.  Fieldwork is offered in conjunction with certain education courses and enables students to observe and/or participate in the teaching process under the direction of mentor teachers who model exemplary teaching strategies.

Ø  Professional Development Experiences

TEACH offers an annual Guest Speakers’ Symposium and a College and Career Night.  The former allows students to gain valuable information related to pedagogy, financial aid, and test preparation for future educators and the latter allows TEACH students to explore all of the possible career options within the field of education.  Additionally, various information sessions on a variety of topics are offered throughout the year on an as-needed basis.

Quarterly Newsletter

TEACH students also benefit from a quarterly newsletter that includes information about careers in education as well as professional development activities and special services and/or events on campus and in the community.

TEACH Library

TEACH also offers students a variety of books housed within the College’s library designed to enhance their success as future educators.  Book topics include test preparation and teaching methods. 

Future Teachers' Club

The Future Teachers’ Club provides TEACH students with an opportunity to attend monthly meetings designed to foster social and professional connections among members. 

Child Development Club

The purpose of the organization is to bring together students and community members with an interest in fostering the growth and development of children in their communities.
