Women's Studies 1
An Introduction to Women's Studies

3 units; 3 hours lecture

This course is an interdisciplinary introduction to the study of Women's Studies . It will examine the traditional gender, class, racial and ethnic social constructs and their impact on women.  Through the use of literature, art and film about and by women, attention will be given to the psychology, image and role of women in society. Consideration will also be given to the development of women's consciousness and culture.

History 18A
Women and American History from the Colonial Era to 1870

3 units; 3 hours lecture
Recommended Preparation:  eligibility for English 1A

This course surveys the history of women in America from the Colonial Era to 1870.  Through the exploration of American Womanhood, the course will focus on the realities of the public and personal lives of women as well as the efforts of women to broaden their scope of experience and autonomy.  Consideration will also be given to concepts that best describe the historical position of women in society; women as history makers and interpreters of that history; and the contributions women have made to the development of American civilization.

History 18B
History of Women in the United States from 1870 to the Present

3 units; 3 hours lecture
Recommended Preparation:  eligibility for English 1A
Credit, degree applicable
Transfer CSU, UC

In this course students will examine the history of women in the United States from 1870 to the present. Focus is on the public and private lives of women and the changes women have experienced in their political, economic, and social status. Topics include the societal contributions of women as participants and leaders in the major historical events and movements.

Note:  History 18A is not a prerequisite.
