MUSIC
El Camino College Music Department offers a comprehensive foundation in the theory, history, and performance of music to students seeking a degree to transfer or courses for musical training and enrichment.
The department is organized through a structured program of training in a variety of solo performance media, large and small ensembles, music theory and musicianship, basic vocal and keyboard skills, and the study of music history. Students have the opportunity to participate in the analysis, interpretation, and performance of piecesof music in a variety of genres and style periods. Students qualify to pursue a variety of music-related careers and advanced degree options.
An Associate in Arts Degree in Music will be earned upon completing the course requirements. A music major may be pursued in several areas of emphasis including theory/composition, history, applied music, keyboard, voice, guitar, brass, strings, woodwinds, percussion, and electronic studio.
There are many performing instrumental and choral ensembles to participate in, including orchestra, concert band, jazz band, pep band, small ensembles, chorale, concert choir, community choir, and women's choir. Opportunities also exist for children and youth in both orchestra and choral ensembles.
Many classes include the opportunity to attend performances by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists that are presented by the El Camino College Center for the Arts. This also includes opportunities to participate in or observe master classes presented by the visiting artists.
Music students have a unique opportunity to audition to study privately with El Camino College music faculty through the Applied Music program, This program includesone hour of classroom recital instruction per week, a one-hour private lesson per week, five hours of on-campus practice per week, and participation in a major performing ensemble. Students who have graduated from this program have continued on to win numerous competitions and awards.
Graduates have successfully auditioned and transferred to such colleges and universities as Juilliard School of Music; Manhattan School of Music; Indiana University; New England School of Music; UCLA; University of California at Irvine; University of California at Santa Barbara, California State University, Long Beach; California State University, Dominguez Hills; California State University, Fullerton; USC; and many others.
