THEATRE
The El Camino College Theatre Department offers a comprehensive foundation in the theory, history, and practice of theater to students seeking a degree to transfer, a certificate, or courses for theatrical training and enrichment. This is fulfilled through a structured program of theater study in the areas of history, dramatic literature, acting, performance, technical theater and related crafts.
Students have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities through performance of in-classroom scenes, public performances, play reading, research, play writing, and technical crew assignments. Students qualify to pursue a variety of theater-related careers and advanced degree options.
Degrees
An Associate in Arts Degree in Theatre will be granted to the student completing the required courses. The Theater major may be pursued in several areas of emphasis including acting, technical theatre, and production. For more information, click here.
Certificate of Competence or Completion
A Certificate of Competence or Completion will be granted, pending approval by the Chancellor's Office, in Entertainment Lighting Technology.
This new program is designed to be competed in two semesters. Curriculum includes training in the operation of intelligent lighting fixtures, repair and maintenance, setup of systems, programming and lighting design with intelligent lighting systems, computer application for the entertainment lighting industry, and portfolio planning. Curriculum Notes
The acting curriculum features several levels of acting classes including improvisation, audition and cold reading, acting styles, acting Shakespeare, movement, voice and articulation, dialects, and fundamentals of stage direction. Students have opportunities to perform in six different productions throughout the year including mainstage productions, original one-acts, and a major musical production. Opportunities also are offered in technical theater including stagecraft, sound and lighting, costuming, theatrical makeup, and backstage production.
Many classes include the opportunity to attend professional productions that are presented by the El Camino College Center for the Arts. This also includes opportunities to participate in or observe master classes presented by visiting artists.
