Khalid
Elshorafa (2000-2002) Proudest Moment: Winning four awards at State [2002]. To me, the awards weren't a symbol of achievement as they were a symbol of hard work. Fondest Moment: Hugging while crying my coach Francesca when I received three awards at Nationals. She placed so much work (even at times I didn't deserve) in me that she turned out to be more than a coach--she was like a big sister. Team dinners are also fond memories because everyone makes fun of other teams, judges, and each other. Transfer Plans: UCSB—Political Science major. Where is he now? Gainfully employed
Javon
Johnson (1999-2001) Proudest Moment: Fondest Memory: Crystallize It: I'd just like to thank the El Camino team and all the coaches for allowing me to grow as a competitor, and for teaching me not only about forensics, but about life. I couldn't have asked for a more diverse group of people from different walks of life who were so close. Transfer

Karen
Nishie (1999-2001) Marty
Collins Fellowship Award winner, 2000-2001. Proudest Moment: Winning
the gold medal in Prose at Nationals. I
had worked very hard on the piece and it had never received the acknowledgement
it deserved. On the tenth re-write at nationals it not only placed, but
took a gold medal. Fondest Memory: At
nationals 2001, two competitors (from other schools) came to me and told me that
I had been a positive influence on them. That
seeing me at tournaments and whatever encouragement I gave them really made a
difference to them. It made me feel
very humble. Crystallize it:
Forensics has had the single most positive impact on my academic career. Transfer plans: California
State University, Fullerton—Speech Communication major. Long-term goals:
To
get a Master’s Degree in Speech and to coach forensics full-time at a
Community College. Where is she now? CSU Fullerton; DOF at Vanguard University.

Joe
Scarlata (1999-2001) Where is he now? In the navy.
Jessica
Schroeder (1999-2001)
Proudest Moment: When
I low-cumed in impromptu at Nationals. I
was the last one on the stage in front of 200 people.
I took it in and let myself be proud of how hard I had worked.
Fondest Memory: Sam
[Samantha Milton-Campbell] and I got picked to do the demo debate.
We were in an auditorium in front of 300 people against Travis and Rath.
I was terrified and had this vision of standing up at the podium,
not knowing what to say, and running off the stage crying.
I did an excellent job and sat down, feeling, “Thank God I didn’t
screw up!” Crystallize it:
My successes in debate are a product of 3 things: 1. Excellent, intelligent
coaches who pushed me to succeed in just the right ways.
2. Talent—often wasted, but this time used.
3. An education that gave me the tools to not give up when I would have
before, but to tap into my potential. Where is she now? University of San Diego Law School
John
Suzuki (2002-2004)
