Introduction to Exercise and Physical Activity for Older
Adults

Though both lecture and activity, this introductory course is
designed to develop an understanding of the health-enhancing value
of exercise in the older adult. The focus will be on the major
areas of importance regarding the influence of exercise and
physical activity on aging. These include cardiorespiratory
fitness; strength training and development of muscle mass and bone
density; postural stability, flexibility, and the prevention of
falls; the role of exercise in psychological function; and exercise
for the very old and frail.

Exercise and Physical Activity for Older Adults,
Advanced Training

Prerequisite: one semester of Physical Education 101abcd with a

This is an advanced course, designed to build upon
previously developed exercise concepts in a continuing program of
fitness development for the older adult. Reassessments, and
continued training in cardiorespiratory, strength, flexibility,
balance, and posture training will allow the student to further
develop health-related components of fitness.

PE 260 – Basic Principles of Fitness and Nutrition

Students receive basic information regarding application of the components of health-related fitness (cardiorespiratory, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition) to programs of exercise designed to enhance lifestyle, physical performance, and decrease risk of degenerative diseases. Basic nutrition, the “prudent diet” and weight control are also discussed to further augment a positive health program. Complete fitness assessment and an individualized exercise prescription is available (and highly recommended) in the Laboratory of Exercise Sciences. Lab fee (optional) $50.

This course examines nutritional and dietary requirements of actively exercising adults and those engaged in competitive sports. The course emphasizes the study of optimal nutritional regimens for improved fitness and performance, the role of supplements as ergogenic aids, and the integration of diet and exercise in achieving goal body weight and composition.

Instruction in planning and carrying out an exercise program specific to one’s present level of fitness. Specific values of different kinds of exercise are discussed in the context of a total health program. Nutrition and weight control are fully covered so that students may develop a new awareness of the contribution food makes to total fitness as well as to hidden problems in the diet. A computerized diet assessment is a standard part of the course. Other topics include stress management, injury prevention and treatment, and the role of diet and exercise in disease. Complete fitness testing and exercise prescription is available in the Laboratory of Exercise Science. Lab fee for optional testing: $50.
PE 290 – Personal Fitness Trainer

This course provides the scientific foundations and
practical experience required by Personal Fitness Trainers for
certification by agencies such as American College of Sports
Medicine (ACSM), National Strength Coaches Association (NSCA),
National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), and others. The course
is broadbased with topical areas including basic exercise
physiology, biomechanics, fitness assessments, exercise
prescriptions, fitness training principles, nutrition, weight
management and work with special populations. The business aspects
of Personal Training are also reviewed.

This course is designed for the respiratory care student, practicing respiratory therapist, personal fitness trainer, or anyone interested in cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Course content includes purposes and applications of cardiopulmonary exercise testing, instrumentation, testing methods, physiological responses to exercise, and data integration and analysis.
