LVN - RN 30 UNIT OPTION

Nurse with babyThe Licensed Vocational Nurse may establish eligibility to take the state licensing examination to become a Registered Nurse in California only, by completing a sequence of courses. The Associate Degree is not awarded upon completion of this program, and the nurse in not a graduate of an accredited nursing program. Applicants are admitted as space is available.

This program includes advanced experience in the health care setting that correlates with classroom instruction in theory. The student must perform satisfactorily in the clinical area to receive credit in any nursing course. A grade of "C" (75%) or better is necessary in all courses taken after admission to the ECC Nursing Program.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Current LVN license
  • High School graduate or equivalent GED exam
  • Completion of all health requirements prior to the first clinical day
  • Possession of current basic life support card 
  • Completion of the following college science courses with a "C" or better
  • Physiology 3-4 units
  • Microbiology 4-5 units
  • Both courses must include a lab
  • Minimum GPA of 2 . 0 on all transcripts completed since high school graduation
  • Completion of the ECC Nursing Drug Computation Test
  • Complete the following courses in sequence (Nursing 60A is optional) with a minimum of "C" (75%) or better:
    • Nursing 149 - Advanced Placement  (2 Units, 8 weeks)
    • Nursing 154 - Mental Health  (4 Units, 8 weeks)
    • Nursing 251 - Legal/Ethical Considerations  (1 Unit, 8 weeks)
    • Nursing 253 - Intermediate Nursing Process II  (4.5 Units, 8 weeks)
    • Nursing 254 - Advanced Nursing Process I  (7 Units, 12 weeks)
    • Nursing 255 - Advanced Nursing Process II (2.5 Units, 4 weeks)

Total 29 - 30 Units

Graduates of a Diploma School of Nursing are not considered an advanced placement applicant since they already have an RN license. However, their transcripts may be evaluated and a total of 34 units of nursing for ECC may be granted toward an AS Degree once they have met the following criteria.

  • Possess a valid Calif. RN license
  • Earn 12 college units in residence at ECC - from General Education Requirements
    (Area A-E)
  • File a written petition with the nursing office requesting the granting of units toward an AS degree.
