El Camino College ADN Nursing Program (Generic)

The El Camino College Nursing Program accepts applications twice a year beginning the third Monday in September and the third Monday in March. Each application period will last for three weeks.

Prospective nursing students must complete the following steps in advance of the application filing period:

1. Complete the requirements for admission to the college.

2. Graduate from high school or earn a passing score on the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or have earned an associate (AA) or higher degree.

3. Attend a mandatory general information session for prospective nursing students.

4. Complete the following prerequisite courses to the Nursing Program with a minimum 2.5 grade point average: Anatomy 30 or 32, Physiology 31, Microbiology 33 and English 1A. All science courses must have been completed within seven years prior to the date the application is submitted.

a. Note: Completion of a college-level Chemistry course with a lab is a prerequisite to both Physiology 31 and Microbiology 33 at El Camino College. A waiver for the Chemistry prerequisite (for Microbiology and Physiology) may be requested if the student has passed a high school Advanced Placement Chemistry Test with a score of 4 or 5 or has passed the ECC Chemistry Placement Test.

b. No more than one repeat of any basic science prerequisite (Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, or Microbiology) will be allowed within 7 years of the application filing date.

5. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all college work completed since high school graduation.

6. Complete Elementary Algebra (Math 40 or 41B or equivalent) or pass the Math Competency Exam. (Effective fall 2009, intermediate algebra, Math 70 will be the new graduation requirement).

7. Complete a Reading Assessment test with a passing score of 60 or greater. (If a student receives a score below 60, the student must complete remediation which includes Academic Strategies 1abcd).

8. Complete or have in progress Nursing 145 “Introduction to Nursing”. If N145 is in progress, student must provide documentation of completion of the course to the Nursing Office by the end of the semester.

9. Transcripts:

a. U.S. transcripts from all colleges attended since high school must be mailed directly to the ECC Crenshaw campus Admissions Office or the Compton Education Center Nursing Department. No hand carried transcripts will be accepted.

b. All transcripts from outside the United States must be evaluated by an ECC-approved foreign evaluation service.

c. Transcripts must be received by the admission office no later than August 1 for Fall applications and February 1 for Spring applications.

d. Students must confirm with the Admissions Office that transcripts have arrived prior to making a counseling appointment.

10. Contact the counseling center to schedule an appointment with a nursing counselor.

a. Appointments should be scheduled well in advance of the application deadline but only after completing steps 1 through 9 above.

b. Counselors will review applicant’s documentation and if documentation is deemed complete, counselors will:

i. Complete a Nursing Program Verification form.

ii. Give the student a Nursing Program Application Form.

c. Students should submit the completed application form to the Admissions and Records office on the ECC Crenshaw campus or the Nursing Office on the Compton Education Center campus.

d. Incomplete applications will NOT be accepted under any circumstances.

WAIT LIST:

If there are more applicants than places, a wait list will be generated. The date stamped on the application by the Admissions office on the Crenshaw campus or the Nursing department office on the Compton campus will determine the applicants place on the wait list. The earlier a student submits the completed application, the higher the student will be placed on the wait list. Students will not be advised of their wait list number. Please do not contact the nursing department office to make inquiries about waitlist status. Currently the wait time is 1-3 semesters.

If a 2.5 cumulative GPA is maintained by the nursing applicant, eligibility continues while on the waiting list.

The wait list does not guarantee a place in the program, it merely lists qualified applicants in the order their applications were received.

READINESS ASSESSMENT:

The California Community College Chancellor’s Office has approved the use of Nursing Program Readiness tests throughout California. In order to enhance student success and reduce attrition, ECC will implement this test effective Spring 2009. Students on the waitlist will be notified via ECC email of available test times. Students must sign up for a specific test date. Readiness Assessment Scores from other Nursing Schools will not be accepted. If a prospective student receives a score below the state recommended score, the student will be required to complete remediation. (Please see separate document entitled “ECC Nursing Program Readiness Testing and Remediation”).

CONDITIONAL OFFER:

Once the applicant’s name has moved to the top of the wait list, the applicant will be notified via ECC email that they have been conditionally accepted into the nursing program. The emails will be sent twice a year in November and May. Upon receipt of a conditional offer, applicants should print out any attached documents and choose one of the following options: Accept the offer, defer for one semester (one time only) or decline the offer. Acceptance or deferral of the conditional offer must be received in writingin the nursing office by the date specified in the email. Failure to reply by the specified date will result in the removal of the applicant’s name from the waitlist. Upon receipt of the applicant’s signed acceptance letter, attendance at a mandatory orientation and successful completion of the Readiness Test, the offer converts from a conditional place to a confirmed place.

Any applicant who accepts a place and attends an orientation but does not attend the first day of class will be dropped from the program and will have to reapply.

REQUIRED PROGRAM GPA:

Nursing students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 to continue in the nursing program, graduate and receive an Associate in Science degree. Nursing Assistant certification is highly desirable for entry into the nursing program.

PROGRAM READMISSION AND COURSE REPETITION:

Students who leave the nursing program (self or faculty initiated) are eligible to be readmitted to the program subject to availability of space. Only one single nursing course, in which a student has received a D or F grade, may be repeated. The repeat and stop out policy is available for review in the Nursing Office and is published in the Student Handbook. Student academic standing at the time of leaving the program will determine whether academic support courses will be prescribed for completion before re-entry. Students not eligible to re-enter the program may individually appeal their re-entry status through the Acceptance, Transfer and Progression Committee.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING:

Students intending to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing should consult a Nursing counselor.

CALIFORNIA STATE LICENSURE:

All graduates of the Nursing Program are eligible to take the National Licensing Examination (NCLEX) and must pass the exam to practice in California. The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) requires that all students applying for the NCLEX be fingerprinted and submit a fingerprint card with the licensing examination application. The law provides for denial of licensure for crimes or misdemeanors which are substantially related to nursing qualifications, functions or duties. If the BRN determines that the denial of licensure is valid, it is the responsibility of the applicant to present sufficient evidence of rehabilitation. Applicants who have questions regarding limitations related to licensure should contact the California Board of Registered Nursing, (916) 322-3350 prior to entering the program.

ACCREDITATION:

The Nursing Program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006. (212) 363-5555 ext. 153. The El Camino Community College District is committed to providing equal opportunity in which no person is subjected to discrimination on the basis of ethnic group identification, national origin, religion, age, sex, race, color, ancestry, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability or retaliation.
STUDENTS ARE REMINDED TO NOTIFY THE NURSING OFFICE OF ANY CHANGES IN NAME, ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER OR EL CAMINO COLLEGE EMAIL ADDRESS. STUDENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED VIA THEIR ECC EMAIL ADDRESS REGARDING APPLICATION STATUS.
