TRANSFER APPLICATION PROCESS

I am an LVN/LPN and I want to become an RN. What do I have to do?

  • Pick up an ECC application for admission to the college. Complete the application and submit it to the Admissions Office.
  • Call the Counseling Center (310 660-3458) and make an appointment to see a NURSING COUNSELOR. Bring all college transcripts to the meeting.
  • Obtain an upward mobility information packet from the Counseling Center or the Nursing Department.
  • Take the DRP (Degrees of Reading Power) Test and attend a nursing orientation session. A schedule of exam dates is available in Counseling or the Nursing Department.
  • AFTER the counselor has evaluated your transcripts and given you written notification that you are eligible to enroll in nursing, obtain an application for admission to the nursing program.
  • AFTER the counselor has indicated that you are eligible for admission to Nursing, call the secretary of the Nursing Department (310 660-3281) and request an appointment with the Director of Nursing. This appointment will evaluate your previous nursing education and determine proper placement in the curriculum. Bring college catalogs, course syllabi and other information that will assist the Department to determine previous course content.
  • File your application during the filing periods listed in the schedule of classes or the college catalog. In general, filing periods are in October for the Spring semester and in March for the Fall semester.
  • Admissions to the upward mobility program are limited to space-available basis.

Admissions to the upward mobility program are limited to space-available basis.

What criteria will determine my eligibility for the RN Program?

  • Have a current GPA of 2.5 in all work completed. Applicants from an accredited nursing program must have a GPA of 2.0 in Nursing courses and GPA of 2.5 in non-nursing college support courses (i.e. Anatomy, English, etc.) completed prior to the application to ECC. (Consult the Requirements for the Major printed in the college catalog to determine the support courses required.)
  • Transfer applicants from an accredited ADN nursing program must submit proof that he/she was a student in good standing and eligible to return to the institution from which the transfer is taking place.
  • An appeals process is available to students who are ineligible to return to the previous nursing program. The Appeals Process must be resolved BEFORE further consideration of the application is possible.
  • LVN/LPN's or Psychiatric Technicians must be currently licensed.
  • Complete the ECC Nursing Drug Computation Test.
  • Possess a current Basic Life Support CPR certificate.
  • Complete all program admission requirements (30 unit option applicants excepted).
  • Show proof of High School graduate status or acceptable levels on the GED test.
  • Show proof of Criminal Background Clearance.

I am a diploma graduate, do I qualify for Advanced Placement?

Diploma graduates are not considered as advanced placement applicants since they already hold an RN license. However, California Community Colleges have a policy of evaluating transcripts of applicants who have completed a diploma nursing program. A total of 34 units in nursing from ECC may be granted to the diploma graduate toward an AS Degree once they meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid California RN license
  • Earn 12 college units in residence at ECC recommended from Area A-E of the General Education Requirements.
  • File a petition with the Nursing office requesting the granting of units toward an AS degree.
  • Refer to the page on licensure for information on individuals who have been convicted of a crime and the effect this may have on licensure.

For more information on Advanced Placement, please contact: the Counseling Center or the Nursing Department.
