Physical Education 96abcd Cooperative Career Education

Through a set of learning objectives established by the student, employer, and instructor, each student will work with and learn from experts in the Physical Education field. The course is designed primarily for major students in the fields of Physical Education, Health, Dance, and Recreation who wish to undertake special studies not covered in the normal Division offerings. This course is designed to provide students with a fitness foundation through the means of walking. Students will be given a fitness assessment profile and develop an individualized exercise prescription. Conditioning emphasis will be placed on stamina, strength, flexibility, body composition, and muscle endurance. Walking techniques and fitness strategies will also be highlighted. Student’s progress of fitness and walking skills will be monitored and assessed regularly to assure completion of their goals and objectives.
Physical Education 4abcd (formerly 4ab, 4cd) Basketball

This course offers instruction and practice in the skills of basketball for the beginner to the advanced player. Offensive and defensive skills such as dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting, and rebounding will be covered. In team tournament play, strategies and rules of the game will be covered. Specific conditioning for the game of basketball will also be incorporated.
Physical Education 7ab Baseball, Beginning

This course, which is open to all students, focuses on beginning techniques is baseball. No prior skill or experience is required. Instruction will stress basic fundamentals: offense, defense and game strategies.
Physical Education 8 Physical Agility for Fire-Fighters

This course is designed to give basic instruction in the activities of the Physical Agility Test Battery required for admission to the Fire Academy. Using instruction and demonstration of each item in this standard battery, students will be required to complete the test in the prescribed time period. A post-testing summary and review will complete the course. Justification for maintaining a high level of physical fitness will be presented.
Note: This nine-hour course is conducted on a Saturday or a Sunday. Note: This course is repeatable.
Physical Education 14ab Boxing

Instruction and practice in the basic skills of boxing. Emphasis on footwork, jabbing, crossing, hooking, slipping, countering, blocking and shadow boxing. An understanding of rules and strategy, along with controlled competition.

This course provides instruction and practice in beginning, intermediate and advanced skills of gymnastics. Various skills such as tumbling, vaulting and balancing are taught along with scoring and etiquette. Skill executions in a competitive environment are included in the course. Olympic men’s and women’s gymnastic apparatus is used for demonstration and practice.

This course offers basic through advanced instruction in the theory and techniques of progressive resistance exercise training. Course content includes basic muscle anatomy, individual goal setting and progress monitoring, exposure to a variety of training systems, and specific application of methods to individual goals and needs.

This course offers instruction, practice, and competitive participation for the beginner to the advanced soccer player. Technical skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting, chipping and juggling will be practiced. Conditioning, rules, tactics and tournament play are incorporated in the course.

Though both lecture and activity, this introductory course is designed to develop an understanding of the health-enhancing value of exercise in the older adult. The focus will be on the major areas of importance regarding the influence of exercise and physical activity on aging. These include cardio-respiratory fitness; strength training and development of muscle mass and bone density; postural stability, flexibility, and the prevention of falls; the role of exercise in psychological function; and exercise for the very old and frail.

This is an advanced course, designed to build upon previously developed exercise concepts in a continuing program of fitness development for the older adult. Reassessments, and continued training in cardiorespiratory, strength, flexibility, balance, and posture training will allow the student to further develop health-related components of fitness.

Physical Education 135abcd Student-Athlete Individualized Exercise Program

This course provides instruction and practice in conditioning students and athletes with anaerobic and aerobic exercise. Proper stretching techniques, agilities and form running will also be introduced and incorporated into the total program. An individualized fitness assessment will also be completed on all student-athletes. The instruction in planning and carrying out this exercise (conditioning) program will be specific to one’s present level of fitness and sport.
Physical Education 201 (formerly 200A) Introduction to Adapted Physical Education

This course provides an introduction to Adapted Physical Education with an orientation to specific disabilities such as stroke, spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy. Exercise theory and techniques will be discussed and wheelchair transfers will be practiced. Students will learn the rationale and precautions for patient-hospital bed positioning. Consequences of disuse syndrome and fitness benefits of exercise will also be discussed. Students will gain practical experience working with students with disabilities who are enrolled in the Adapted Physical Education courses at El Camino College. Students interested in pursing careers in physical education, physical therapy and nursing will find this course valuable.
Physical Education 204abcd (formerly 204ab, 204cd) Badminton

This course provides instruction and practice in the skills of badminton for the beginner to the advanced player. Progressions of skills include serving, clears, net shots, smash and drive. Rules, strategy and etiquette will be covered. Opportunities for singles and doubles competition in tournament play is included in the course.

Physical Education 208abcd Bowling

This course provides instruction and practice in the fundamentals of bowling. Bowling etiquette and scoring will also be covered. Students will participate in intra-class competition in an individual handicap league which also introduces the student to one of America’s leading recreational sports.
Note: Students will pay a user fee for each class meeting for three lines of bowling, shoes and bowling ball. Students must furnish their own transportation to and from the bowling alley.
Physical Education 220abcd Naginata: A Japanese Martial Art

This course provides knowledge and skills specifically related to Naginata - a Japanese martial art. Basic Japanese terminology will orient students to the equipment and with instructional cues. Students will use the naginata (pole arm) for offensive and defensive techniques. Sparring strategies will be discussed and practiced. The course is taught according to traditional Japanese teaching methods with emphasis on self-development such as mental focus, self-discipline and self-confidence. Culture, philosophy and historical concepts with Naginata will also be discussed.

Physical Education 221abcd (formerly 221ab, 221cd) Defense Tactics

This course provides instruction and practice in methods of self-defense. The application of common sense procedures in times of emergency will also be explored. The student will learn various strikes, punches and kicks as well as ground defense strategies. Defense against the headlock, bear hug, lapel grab and chokes will also be examined. Prevention of training related injuries will be addressed through proper warm-up and stretching.
Physical Education 222abcd (formerly 222ab, 222cd) Fencing

This course provides instruction and practice in the skills of fencing. Movement skills such as advance, retreat, disengagement and counter parries will be taught. Tournaments are included in the course allowing the students to perform fencing skills in a competitive environment. The rules of collegiate and international fencing are covered as well as officiating and etiquette.
Physical Education 224abcd (formerly 224ab, 224cd) Golf

This course provides instruction and practice in the skills of golf for the beginner, intermediate or advanced golfer. Grip, stance, swing development and putting are taught along with the rules, strategy and etiquette of the game. Instruction and practice will be on campus and at a local course.
Note: Student will pay a user fee for each class meeting for 3-par 9 holes (short course). Student must provide own transportation to and from the golf course.
Physical Education 232abcd Racquetball

This course offers instruction and practice in the basic skills of racquetball with an emphasis on serving, forehand and backhand play. This course also offers an understanding of rules and strategy, along with competition singles, cutthroat, and doubles. Eye protectors are required. Students must provide all balls and racquet.

This course is designed for cheerleaders who are able to perform cheers, dance and stunting at an intermediate level. This course follows the American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training program and provides the opportunity for certification as a Red Cross Lifeguard, Waterfront Lifeguard, Head Lifeguard, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer. Emphasis is placed on personal safety, professional conduct, injury prevention, emergency preparation, public interaction, and rescue techniques for pool and non-surf open water environment. First aid instruction with certification is also incorporated into the course.

Instruction and practice in springboard diving and safety skills. Major emphasis upon coordination, body mechanics, and mastery of diving techniques. Maximum achievement: ability to perform adequately with good body mechanics one or more dives from each of the five basic diving groups: forward, backward, reverse, inward, and twisting.

Instruction and workout in the basic skills of aerobic cardiovascular conditioning in water. Emphasis on cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. All exercises are done with music accompaniment.

This course offers instruction, practice, and match play competition for the beginner, intermediate, and advanced tennis player. Basic strokes are taught at the beginning level and more advanced instruction is offered as the student develops his/her game proficiency. Also covered will be strategy, rules, scoring and etiquette.

This course provides instruction and practice in the skills of volleyball. Skill progressions of serving, passing, setting, spiking, digging and blocking are taught along with game strategy. Tournaments are included in the course, allowing the students to execute the skills in a competitive environment, the rules of both the indoor and the outdoor games will be covered. Specific conditioning for the game of volleyball is also incorporated in the course.

This course is designed to improve both strength and flexibility through mind and body integration. The course presents the asanas (yoga postures) woven together to provide a workout that does not emphasize religion, philosophy or a particular type of meditation. Breathing while performing asanas will be emphasized. Various styles of Hatha Yoga will be studied and practiced. This course will give the student both the knowledge and the practice to move toward improved health and greater mind and body awareness.
Physical Education 260 Fitness Evaluation, Education and Individualized Exercise Prescription

Students receive basic information regarding application of the components of health-related fitness (cardiorespiratory, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition) to programs of exercise designed to enhance lifestyle, physical performance, and decrease risk of degenerative diseases. Basic nutrition, the “prudent diet” and weight control are also discussed to further augment a positive health program. Complete fitness assessment and an individualized exercise prescription is available (and highly recommended) in the Laboratory of Exercise Sciences. Lab fee (optional) $50.
Physical Education 270 Fitness and Sports Nutrition

This course examines nutritional and dietary requirements of actively exercising adults and those engaged in competitive sports. The course emphasizes the study of optimal nutritional regimens for improved fitness and performance, the role of supplements as ergogenic aids, and the integration of diet and exercise in achieving goal body weight and composition.
Physical Education 280 Fitness Education, Assessment and Exercise Programs

Instruction in planning and carrying out an exercise program specific to one’s present level of fitness. Specific values of different kinds of exercise are discussed in the context of a total health program. Nutrition and weight control are fully covered so that students may develop a new awareness of the contribution food makes to total fitness as well as to hidden problems in the diet. A computerized diet assessment is a standard part of the course. Other topics include stress management, injury prevention and treatment, and the role of diet and exercise in disease. Complete fitness testing and exercise prescription is available in the Laboratory of Exercise Science. Lab fee for optional testing: $50.

This course provides continued guidance and training in the development and monitoring of personal exercise prescriptions and nutrition programs. Individual consultations, fitness and nutrition reassessments, a sustained training program conducted in the campus Fitness Training Center, and guided independent projects will aid the student in optimizing exercise and dietary regimens. A 3-hour orientation will explain course procedures and requirements and provide guidance in establishing the initial training program.

Physical Education 290 Personal Fitness Trainer

This course provides the scientific foundations and practical experience required by Personal Fitness Trainers for certification by agencies such as American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Strength Coaches Association (NSCA), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), and others. The course is broad based with topical areas including basic exercise physiology, biomechanics, fitness assessments, exercise prescriptions, fitness training principles, nutrition, weight management and work with special populations. The business aspects of Personal Training are also reviewed.

This course follows the guidelines of both the Aerobic Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and the International Dance Exercise Association (IDEA).

This course provides the knowledge and skill to work all major muscles in a group exercise format. This high repetition workout using light to moderate resistance will increase muscle endurance, muscle tone and metabolic rate. The course will accommodate all levels of fitness.

This course is open to team candidates and athletes for off-season badminton training. All participants will engage in an off-season program stressing instruction, skill development, strength training and cardiovascular conditioning.
