RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I obtain an Application?

Applications are available by making an appointment with the Program Director. For eligibility for an application the following requirements must be met: Complete the 3 Prerequisite Courses: 4 units of Anatomy, 4 units of Physiology and 3 units of the introductory course: Radiologic Technology A (RTEC A) please review link on Application information for additional information

  • Regarding the 3 Prerequisite Courses: 4 units of Anatomy, 4 units of Physiology and 3 units RTEC A
Can I take these classes at other colleges? Which courses are acceptable at ECC?

At ECC - Anatomy 32 is the 4 unit required course (not Anatomy 30) . Physiology 31 (also requires a prerequisite of Chemistry (4, 20 or 21)
RTEC A - 3 units at El Camino College

Anatomy and Physiology courses taken at other accredited colleges are acceptable if: 1) A combo course (A&P) equals 8 units. (4 units each). A 5 or 6 unit course does not meet the 8 unit requirement - this type of course *may (* upon review and evaluation by the Program Director) be used to satisfy the physiology requirement, but a 4 unit Anatomy class must be still completed to meet the requirements of the program- before starting the Rad Tech Program.. 2) Introductory to Radiologic Technology (RTEC A) - Other Radiologic Technology introductory courses taken at other colleges *may (* upon review and evaluation by the Program Director) be used toward obtaining an application for the program, but RTEC A must be completed at ECC before beginning the Radiologic Technology Program.

  • What time of the year are applications accepted?

Appointments are usually scheduled about 2 weeks after the end of each semester (spring, summer and fall)
Other appointment times are available - if you have completed all of the prerequisite courses, have copies of your transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation completed. Please contact the Program Director (via email or phone) for an appointment (faster response through email)

Use xrayteacher@yahoo.com and put Application Appointment request in your message line.
Or call 310 660-3247 to leave your name, phone number.

  • How many students are accepted each year?

The number of students accepted are dependent on the number of clinical sites and positions available - generally from 20 - 24 students per year

  • When does the Program begin? How long is it?

A new class of students begin each Fall Semester. The program is 25 months in length.

  • Is there a waiting list? How long is it?

Students names are placed on the waiting list after completion of an application. The numbers of students on the list varies from semester to semester and year to year. The waiting time has typically been from 1 - 2 years - depending on the date the application is filed.

  • Can I work full time and still attend the Program?

This Radiologic Technology Program is a daytime full-time program. Time requirements for the courses taken on campus as well as the clinical internship may require attendance commitments on some days as early as 7:00 am to as late as 7:00 pm, Monday thru Fridays, depending on the semester of attendance. Please see the schedule of courses and clinical hours on the information section of the main web page for further details.

To be successful in the program, it is strongly recommended that students do not work more than 20 hours per week. This is a rigors program that requires many hours of study and homework in addition to class and clinical attendance.

  • How much does the Program cost?

Generally the total program cost is about $2000.00 for the 2 year period. This includes tuition, books, uniforms, etc.
The current cost for state and national licensure applications are approximately $300.00

Financial Aid, Fee Waivers, Book Vouchers and Scholarships are also available to students who qualify.

It depends on the cost of textbooks and tuition. The current tuition cost per unit is $20.00 per unit.
(see the link on program information to see how many units per semester are averaged)
Textbooks: The major costs for textbooks occur the first semester. These books are reused many times throughout the
program. Additionally, there are 3 more books required later in the program.

How to get started:

  • Enroll in RTEC-A Introduction to Radiologic Technology at El Camino College.

This course provides a basic introduction to Radiologic Technology as a profession and the foundation skills necessary to prepare students who are planning to enter the A.S. Degree Program. Course subject material includes: Careers in Radiologic Technology and Advanced Modalities, Film/Screen and Digital Imaging Principles, Radiation Protection, Radiographic Quality, Radiation Exposure and Safety, Patient Care, Medical Malpractice, Professional Ethics, and Introduction to Radiographic Examinations.

This course in one of the three required pre-requisite courses to submit an application to the program. This course is offered in the Spring and Fall semesters only. It meets for 3.4 hours, one day per week, for 16 weeks. There are usually 2 or 3 sections offered per semester. Check the ECC Schedule of classes for specific course days and times.

  • Download the "course evaluation" form on the left.

This form lists the 3 prerequisite classes required to submit an application for the program and the remaining classes that are needed to be completed to enter into the program. This form can be used as your academic plan to enter the radiology program and evaluate any college courses you may have already completed towards an A.S or higher degree.

  • Make an appointment with a college counselor* to evaluate any previous college course work

The ECC counselors can check your previous course work for articulation with the ECC A.S. degree requirements. Take the R.T. course evaluation form with you to the appointment with the counselor. If your college courses were taken at another college, you should have them evaluated by a college counselor before meeting with the Radiologic Technology Program Director for an application to the RT Program. (*Recommended counselors to see: Chris Jefferies, Ken Keys, Valencia Rayford, Vera Cheng, Ken Gaines)
