ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Radiologic Technology (Medical X-ray)
This program is a diagnostic medical radiography program leading to an A.S. Degree and eligibility to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technology Registry Exam (ARRT) for an R.T. license.
Once the graduate obtains the ARRT (R) licensure and the CRT (RT) certification from the CDPH-RHB in California, the graduate can apply for employment as a fully licensed and certified Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist.
Once the student graduate receives the ARRT (R), and CRT(R) they may apply to take the Fluoroscopy Permit License exam. After successful completion of the fluoroscopy exam, the RT will received the CDPH-RHB CRT (R,F) certification.
Note: At this time, the El Camino College Radiologic Technology Program does not offer specialized courses in FLUOROSCOPY for a State License. The fluoroscopy courses are integrated within the Program Courses.
Note: This program does not offer separate courses in Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, MRI or CT. These are considered advance degree courses that can be taken after completion of the ECC RT Program
The Associate in Science (A.S.) Degree Radiologic Technology program is twenty-five months in length. The program consists of four regular semesters, two eight week summer sessions, and one eight week post session.
The clinical (hospital) training portion of the program parallels the academic courses. Satisfactory completion of degree and certificate requirements qualifies students for State and National Certification examinations.

Note: Radiologic Technology Program Courses must be taken in sequence, and each course must be completed with a minimum grade of "C". Applicants with prior training or experience in Radiologic Technology may petition for credit by examination for RT-A, RT#111, RT#106, and RT#107. Each applicant will be evaluated on an individual basis.

ADMISSION INTO THE PROGRAM
Students are admitted into the program by an application process. The application process is by annual submission - the waiting list for applications has been eliminated. See Application Procedure link on left navigation bar.
A limited number of students are admitted into the program annually. Class size is determined by the availability of clinical space. Qualified applicants may submit their applications during the open application period during the Spring Semester.
Applicants must complete all General Education and Program Major courses to receive the maximum points available for their coursework on the application.
PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION into the Program
Students must also pass a background check and physical exam before being placed at the Clinical Facilities.
TB testing, Physical Exam and a current BLS-CPR certification is also required
Note: There are two mandatory orientation classes during the summer prior to starting the program in the Fall – students accepted into the program will be notified of the time and day.
Students wishing to transfer from another Radiologic Technology program must contact the Program Director for assessment. Advanced standing will be determined following the submission and evaluation of course descriptions, official transcripts, and verification of clinical experience. Students must have completed courses with a grade of "B"or better, and have a letter from the Program Director that they left "in good standing". Any dismissals due to violations of the ARRT Code of Ethics or Rules of Ethics, may prevent acceptance into any other Radiologic Technology Program.

REGARDING A.R.R.T. CERTIFICATION ELIGIBILITY
Students must comply with the “Rules of Ethics” contained in the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists' (ARRT) Standard of Ethics.
The “Rules of Ethics” are minimally acceptable standards of professional conduct for all presently Registered Technologists and Applicants.
The “Rules of Ethics” are intended to promote the protection, safety and comfort of patients.
The A.R.R.T. may deny applications for certification if the applicant has been found guilty of dishonesty, fraud, deceit, acts which deceive the public, felony, child abuse, sex offender crimes; acts involving narcotics, dangerous drugs or devices, assault and/or battery and other crimes.

RE: Requests for Criminal Background Checks: The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals Organizations (JCAHO) added a new standard for its accreditations involving personal background checks on all persons involved in direct patient care, which can include employees, volunteers and students. HR 1.20 & Title 5, section 58106 allows districts to establish limitations on enrollment for various reasons including to protect health and safety.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS for all newly admitted students will be implemented. Successful completion of a criminal background check is required for admission and continuation in all Health Sciences Programs. JCAHO requires verification of competency of all individuals who have direct contact with patients or employees; this includes students doing clinical rotations in the facility. Competency extends beyond technical skills to an individual's criminal history. The criminal background check policy and procedure for meeting this mandated prerequisite is available from the Program Director. The student shall be responsible paying any associated costs of a criminal background check. The Radiologic Technology Program background checks are arranged through the Program Director.

Guidelines on How To Get Started
Enroll in RTEC-A Introduction to Radiologic Technology at El Camino College.
This course provides a basic introduction to Radiologic Technology as a profession and the foundation skills necessary to prepare students who are planning to enter the A.S. Degree Program. Course subject material includes: Careers in Radiologic Technology and Advanced Modalities, Film/Screen and Digital Imaging Principles, Radiation Protection, Radiographic Quality, Radiation Exposure and Safety, Patient Care, Medical Malpractice, Professional Ethics, and Introduction to Radiographic Examinations.
This course is a required pre-requisite course. This course is offered in the Spring and Fall semesters only. It meets for 3.4 hours, one day per week, for 16 weeks. There are usually 2 or 3 sections offered per semester. Check the ECC Schedule of classes for specific course days and times.
Regarding Transfer courses: RTEC-A course is a pre-requisite for the RT Program - and must be completed at El Camino College - Introductory courses taken at other institutions will not be considered for transfer, but may be considered towards additional points on the application - see application instructions for details.
Note: If you have taken and passed previous Radiology Courses, then you may be able to enroll in the RTEC A course during the spring semester that you file the application, but this must be approved by the Program Director prior to the Spring Semester. You must have an in-progress form completed by the instructor, and must be passing the class with a grade of "B" or better at the time the RT application is filed. You must include the "in-progress" report form with your RT application.

This form can be used as your academic plan to enter the radiology program and evaluate any college courses you may have already completed towards an A.S or higher degree.
You will need the new application form and your OFFICIAL transcripts on file in the RECORDS office, when you meet with one of the counselors listed below to have your coursework and GPA evaluated for the application.

Take the R.T. course evaluation form and application form along with your transcripts with you to the appointment with the counselor.
The ECC counselors can check your previous course work for articulation with the ECC A.S. degree requirements.
