HONORS TRANSFER PROGRAM

The Honors Transfer Program at El Camino College is designed to better prepare the highly motivated student to transfer successfully to a university and complete a bachelor's degree.

The program provides a unique learning environment which stresses scholastic excellence and develops the academic awareness necessary to achieve this goal. The major objective of the program is to better prepare students for transfer by focusing on enhanced writing, reading and study skills.

What We Offer: Program Benefits

  • Priority registration for all El Camino College classes.
  • Close academic and social interaction with other highly motivated honors students.
  • Enrollment in honors classes with smaller class size, taught by outstanding faculty.
  • Designation of the Honors Transfer Program on El Camino College transcripts and on the El Camino College associate degrees.

Honors Admission Requirements

  • A minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) from high school or, if already in college, from at least nine academic units
  • Eligibility for or completion of English 1A
  • A completed Honors Transfer Program application and all required materials


Program Completion Requirements

  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA in all transferable courses
  • Complete at least two scheduled visits to an academic counselor
  • Complete four honors enrichment seminars (or alternate extra-curricular activities)
  • Complete a minimum of six honors courses including at least one honors course each semester.
  • Successfully complete English 1A during the first semester in the program.
  • Finish the requirements necessary to be accepted by the transfer institution in selected major


Honors Transfer Agreements

Students who complete the El Camino College Honors Transfer Program may take advantage of the following transfer agreements:

  • UCLA: guaranteed priority admission consideration to the College of Letters and Science.
  • University of California at Irvine: priority admission consideration to the university.
  • Pomona College: admission consideration to the college (requires a 3.5 GPA).
  • Occidental College: Preferred consideration for admission to the college (requires a 3.25 GPA).
  • University of California at Santa Cruz: priority admission consideration to the university.
  • University of California at Riverside: guaranteed admission to the university.
  • Chapman University: priority admission consideration to the university (excluding Communication Studies and Film).
  • Pitzer College: priority admission consideration to the college (requires a 3.5 GPA).
  • California State University, Dominguez Hills: guaranteed admission to the university.
  • California State University, Long Beach: guaranteed admission to the University Honors Program.
  • California State University, San Diego: acceptance into the SDSU Honors Program.
  • Pacific University: scholarship offers.
  • Whitman College: scholarship offers.


Honors Curriculum

Honors courses are academically enriched to intellectually stimulate students, encourage independent, critical thinking and promote close interaction between students and faculty.

Honors courses are chosen to fulfill the requirements of the associate degree as well as to transfer to University of California, California State University and most other universities. Generally, students in the Honors Transfer Program complete the same number of courses as other students planning to transfer.

  • English 1A – Reading and Composition
  • English 1B – Literature and Composition
  • English 1C – Critical Thinking and Composition
  • Geography 5 – World Regional Geography
  • History 32 – Cultural Pluralism in America
  • Music 12 – Music Cultures of the World
  • Oceanography 10 – Introduction to Oceanography
  • Philosophy 23 – Ethics, Law and Society
  • Political Science 10 – International Relations
  • Political Science 1 – Governments of the United States and California
  • Psychology 5 – General Psychology

In fulfilling the requirements for program completion, Honors Transfer Program students majoring in science, mathematics or engineering may include up to three of the following honors level courses:

  • Biology 1A, 1B
  • Chemistry 1A, 1B
  • Computer Science 1, 5
  • Math 190, 191
  • Physics 1A, 1B

Alpha Gamma Sigma – The El Camino College Honor Society

Alpha Gamma Sigma (ΑΣΓ) is the California Community College Honor and Scholarship Society. It is a statewide organization whose purpose is “to foster, promote, maintain and recognize scholarship.�?

The Alpha Phi chapter of the ΑΣΓ at El Camino College attracts many students of all majors striving for academic excellence.

Students with a grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher can apply to Alpha Gamma Sigma. Members can apply for permanent membership after completing 60 units, maintaining at least a 3.25 GPA and meeting other criteria. Members also benefit from a variety of scholarship opportunities, community service participation and other interesting activities.

All members of the California Scholarship Federation and those who graduated high school with at least a 3.5 GPA are invited to join as temporary members during their first semester at El Camino College. Permanent ΑΣΓ members who graduate from El Camino College receive a gold seal on their degree, a notation on their transcript, and wear the gold stole during commencement ceremonies.

Membership applications are accepted for the first eight weeks of each semester and are available in the Activities Center.


Dean’s List

To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must complete 12 or more units with a GPA of 3.5 or higher in any one semester.
