English 1A Consistency Project
The English 1A Consistency Project was designed to increase student success through faculty collaboration in addressing the challenges of adhering to the official course outline and applying consistent standards of rigor and assessment while also addressing our students’ wide range of skills and academic challenges. The faculty examined both the instructional content and the assessment of student work in all sections of English 1A to assess and ultimately ensure the consistency of the English 1A experience for students. Over the course of three workshops, faculty worked together to design a common assessment tool for the purpose of group assessment, practiced the application of the 1A rubric during group norming sessions, and discussed the findings of a department-wide assessment in order to generate suggestions for increased consistency in instruction and assessment. Data was collected and compiled from 1A instructors at both the Torrance and Compton campuses for the spring 2013 English 1A SLO assessment report. In the fall of 2013, 1A assessment leaders, including representatives from adjunct faculty and Compton faculty, met to implement faculty recommendations for English 1A Course Review.
