English as a Second Language (ESL)
“The mission of the ESL department is to equip students with adequate listening, speaking, reading, writing, and academic skills to enable them to be successful in everyday and vocational situations and in transfer-level classes.”
The ESL program at El Camino has been in existence for over 25 years. During that time it has served students from almost 100 different countries. This is an academic program for the serious student. Most attendees want to transfer to a university, improve their ability to communicate in the community, or get their professional certification in any of a wide variety of careers. The department has a large faculty which is highly qualified in second language acquisition and linguistics as well as English. Most of the instructors are bilingual and have lived abroad.
There is also an International Student Program at (310) 660-3431 which helps with visas and housing. International students need a TOEFL score of at least 450. If an international student's TOEFL score is lower than 450, he or she can take classes at El Camino Language Academy before meeting the 450 TOEFL score requirement. Residents must be high school graduates or over 18 years old. Many of our students go on to major in one of almost 100 choices for an Associate of Arts degree or Certificate in a vocational skill area. The ESL classes serve as a great starting point.
