Evelyn Elwell Uyemura
Professor of English as a Second Language
Education: B.A. from Merrimack College, Massachusetts, in English Literature. M.A. from Auburn University, Alabama, in English Literature. M.A. from Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, in Linguistics/TESL.
Experience: Taught ESL at Harper College in Illinois for five years. Taught in a summer program at Beijing Institute of Technology in Beijing, China. Taught at Southwest College in Los Angeles. Taught English and ESL at El Camino College part-time from 1987 to 2000. Worked in the Learning Resources Center at El Camino during the 2000-2001 school year. Began teaching ESL full-time at El Camino in August, 2001
Interesting Facts: Evelyn lives in Torrance with her husband and
daughter. She has traveled in China and Japan, and at various times
studied Latin, Greek, Spanish, French, Japanese, and Lakota. She
enjoys discussing the Big Questions of Life on the Internet and
writing poetry. She is interested in the relationship between
language of dreams and the symbolism of myth and poetry. For
relaxation, she does needlework and paper art, cooks Japanese food,
and reads mostly nonfiction.
