Spanish 1
Elementary Spanish I

4 units; 5 hours lecture
Recommended Preparation: eligibility for English A

This beginning course, taught within the context of Spanish and Spanish-American culture, introduces students to listening, speaking, reading and writing elementary Spanish. Students develop pronunciation and speaking skills along with their understanding of spoken Spanish. Computer programs and audio and video tapes are available to reinforce the language skills acquired in the classroom.

Note: Approved by State Department of Education as Ethnic Studies Course.
*Note: The maximum UC credit allowed for students completing Spanish 1 and Spanish 52A and 52B is four units.

Spanish 2
Elementary Spanish II

4 units; 5 hours lecture
 
Prerequisite: Spanish 1 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent

This course, taught within the context of Spanish and Spanish-American culture, is a continuation of the study of elementary Spanish with an emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students improve their pronunciation and speaking skills along with their understanding of spoken Spanish. Computer programs and audio and video tapes are available to reinforce the language skills acquired in the classroom.

Note: The prerequisite for this course is comparable to two years of high school Spanish.

Spanish 3
Intermediate Spanish I

4 units; 5 hours lecture
Prerequisite: Spanish 2 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent

This intermediate course, taught within the context of Spanish and Spanish-American culture, emphasizes the study of the essentials of Spanish grammar and the fundamentals of formal Spanish composition. Through oral and written practice, students expand their Spanish vocabulary and use of idiomatic expressions. Student read materials of representative Spanish and Spanish-American authors.

Note: The prerequisite for this course is comparable to three years of high school Spanish.

Spanish 4
Intermediate Spanish II

4 units; 5 hours lecture
Prerequisite: Spanish 3 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent

This course, taught within the context of Spanish and Spanish-American culture, is a continuation of the study of essential Spanish grammar and formal composition. Through oral and written practice, students further expand their Spanish vocabulary and use of idiomatic expressions. Students read materials of representative Spanish and Spanish-American authors and participate in daily conversations.

Note: The prerequisite for this course is comparable to four years of high school Spanish.

Spanish 5
Advanced Spanish I

3 units; 3 hours lecture
Prerequisite: Spanish 4 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent

This advanced course, taught within the context of Spanish and Spanish-American culture, is a survey of literature written by Spanish and Spanish-American writers. Students read and summarize the works of representative Spanish and Spanish-American writers to acquire fluency in the language. Written Spanish, with an emphasis on vocabulary building and functional grammar, is also included.

Spanish 6
Advanced Spanish II

3 units; 3 hours lecture
Prerequisite: Spanish 4 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent

This advanced course, taught within the context of Spanish and Spanish-American culture, introduces students to Spanish and Spanish-American literary criticism. Students learn how to write critically about the works of representative Spanish and Spanish-American writers to acquire fluency  in the language. Written Spanish, with an emphasis on vocabulary building and functional grammar, is also included.

Spanish 21ab
Beginning Conversational Spanish

2 units; 2 hours lecture
Prerequisite: Spanish 1 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent

This course is designed to develop competency in oral expression, oral comprehension, and conversational strategies.

Intermediate Conversational

This course is designed for the intermediate student to develop greater fluency in oral expression, increase oral comprehension, and improve pronunciation. Conversational topics are based upon the daily experiences and cultural life of the ethnic areas involved with the language.

Introduction to Spanish and Latin American Language and Cultures

3 units; 3 hours lecture

This course is designed to provide an introduction to the basics of Spanish and Latin American cultures as reflected in the language, literature, philosophy, arts, religion, folklore, and foods. In order to develop insights into the origins of today's Latin culture, the course will include the presentation of Hispanic culture from pre-Roman times and the Latin American culture from pre-Columbian times to the present. The course will also focus on the differences between the Hispanic/Latin-American and non Hispanic cultural mores and attitudes.

This course is designed to explore topics in Spanish more specific than provided in other courses in the regular departmental curriculum. Students are referred to the current schedule of classes for details of specific courses.

Spanish 52A
Spanish for Native Speakers

This course is designed for students with a native-speaking knowledge of Spanish and who have had little or no formal instruction in the Spanish language. The emphasis is on correct spoken and written Spanish free from regionalism and Anglicisms. Special attention is given to correcting faulty speech habits, improving vocabulary, and acquiring skills in writing. Students also become familiar with the similarities and differences existing within and between the cultures of Spain and Spanish America.

Spanish 52B
Spanish for Native Speakers

3 units; 3 hours lecture
Prerequisite: Spanish 52A with a minimum grade of C or equivalent

This course is designed for students with a native-speaking knowledge of Spanish and who have some formal instruction in the Spanish language. This course provides special advanced studies in a subject field of Spanish education not covered in the regular departmental offerings. Regular conferences with the instructor are coordinated with assigned Spanish education projects (60 hours per unit).

Spanish 100
Supervised Tutoring: Foreign Language Tutorial Laboratory

0 units; 1-5 hours lab per week
Corequisite: enrollment in one Spanish class Non-credit

This course provides supervised laboratory time in which students obtain help with the study and practice of Spanish grammar and idiom. The use of computer-assisted instruction is emphasized.

Note: This course is repeatable.
