COSMETOLOGY

Associate in Science and Certificate of Achievement


The Cosmetology program offers students the opportunity to gain proficiency in hair cutting, coloring, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, manicuring, pedicuring, facials, and related procedures. Upon completion of 1600 hours, students will be prepared to take the California State Board of Cosmetology Examination to become licensed. Competencies are assessed regularly in compliance with the California State Board of Cosmetology criteria. Students completing the program may expect to enter the industry as a hair stylist, designer, color, and perm technician, salon owner and operator, esthetician, skin care specialist, or manicure technician.

Student cost for cosmetology materials is approximately $500.00. Students not enrolled at El Camino College and who wish to enter the junior semester must take the Cosmetology Entrance Examination prior to registration. Students entering the senior semester must have completed 999 hours and be an El Camino College student in the junior semester. For summer session enrollment, completion of 399 hours is required. during the summer session, only students who have previously attended El Camino College are eligible.

Students who have completed some cosmetology training out of California must have their transcripts evaluated by the California State Board of Cosmetology before registering in a cosmetology course at El Camino College. Veterans who wish to receive veterans benefits under Title 38, United States Code, are required to enroll in the cosmetology degree program.
