Goals
The primary goal of the Mathematics Department Student Services Program is to assist students in becoming independent learners and achieve academic success.
To help students succeed in their classes, the Mathematical Sciences Student Services Program has established various types of math centers in order to assist students with different learning styles. One such center is the Drop-in Math Study Center (MCS 106) which provides an appropriate atmosphere to study math and provides one-on-one tutoring when needed.
Program Description
The network of math student service centers has been established to provide positive guidance and assistance toward the development of math skills and study skills, they are not replacements for classroom instruction. The math tutoring services are FREE.
To receive the most benefit from this free service, it is recommended that students visit the centers at least once a week rather than visiting just before a test.
I) Drop-in Tutoring is available in MCS 106. Remember to bring your textbook and notes with you when you go to tutoring.
II) All levels of math are tutored, and two types of tutors are employed:
- Peer tutors, current students at ECC, are hired to assist students in Math 10 A/B, Math 23/25, Math 40, Math 41A/B, Math 70, and Math 130. The peer tutors have been recommended by the El Camino Math Department faculty because they do well in math and show a willingness to help others. Peer tutors are easily recognizable by their Math Tutor badges. To receive help from a peer tutor, raise your hand and they will come to you; have your question ready when they approach.
- Advanced Tutors are individuals with a bachelor degree or higher in math or an equivalent major that primarily assist students in transfer level Math courses. They are located at a table at one end of the room. To receive help put your name on the sign in sheet located on their table and the tutor will call your name.
Student Guidelines
- Attend class regularly - prepared to work. This is accomplished by having pencil, paper, and text with you when you go to class, and by pre-reading the section to be lectured that day.
|
- When doing your homework, don’t spend more than 15 minutes on any given problem you cannot solve. Rather, copy the problem down and bring it with your book to the Tutoring Center and discuss the problem with a tutor. In your notes, redo the problem and include each step adding your personal explanation. You can then review these problems on a regular basis.
|
- Always bring your notes, handouts, textbook, and work-in-progress with you to the Math Study Center. Tutors do not do the homework for you, they will look at the work you are doing, then guide you in the proper direction.
|
- Sign in and out at the receptionist station by the door. To maintain this service free of charge for the student, the number of hours students use the tutoring center are recorded and used when requesting funding.
|
- Please do not bring food or drinks into the Math Study Center (Except bottled water)

How to become a Tutor
If you are interested in becoming a tutor, you can stop by the Mathematical Science Division office located in MCS 102 and pick up an application. Complete the application and return it along with a letter of recommendation from your instructor and an unofficial copy of your last semester grades. You will be called for an interview and asked to demonstrate your ability in communicating to a student how to solve a problem. You will also be given a short test.
Tutors working in the Math Study Center must have completed Math 180 with at least a B.
Tutors working in the classroom with Instructors must have completed Math 70 or above.
If you are hired, the placement center will need a picture ID and your social security card along with the necessary paperwork given to you at the time you are hired (International Students must have all proper ID that permits them to work at El Camino College). It is then your responsibility to be sure all paperwork is completed and brought to Job Placement in a timely manner. After all paperwork is complete you will be asked for a schedule of the hours you are able to work and the coordinator will give you a schedule showing which hours you are working and which student service you have been assigned.
