ASTRONOMY 25 (Stars and Galaxies)

3 units; 3 hours lecture
Recommended Preparation: eligibility for English 2R
Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC

This course is an introduction to the Universe and its history, from the Big Bang to the emergence of intelligent life on Earth. The course covers the Sun, its life history, and its influence on the Earth. The formation, evolution, and fates of different kinds of stars are examined. An overview of the Milky Way galaxy is presented, leading to a discussion of galaxy types, their clustering and evolution. The course concludes with an examination of cosmology, the study of the birth, structure, and evolution of the Universe as a whole. Included is a discussion of the possibility of and the search for extraterrestrial life.
