Onizuka Space Science Day 2019

Serious-minded science students in Grades 5 through 12 are invited to attend Onizuka Space Science Day 2019 at El Camino College!
The Ellison S. Onizuka Memorial Committee, El Camino College, and American Honda Motor Co., Inc. sponsor this free, hands-on conference. This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident that took the lives of the seven crew members, including Ellison Onizuka.
Reservations for Onizuka Space Science Day 2019 have reached capacity.
Walk-ins are welcome on the morning of the event, but there is no guarantee of participation in the breakout sessions or receiving a lunch ticket.

This Year's Astronaut
This year's featured NASA Astronaut is Stanley Glen Love. Love completed his first spaceflight in 2008 to deliver the Columbus laboratory module to the International Space Station and install it there, logging more than 306 hours in space, including 2 spacewalks. He currently works as crew representative for the Space Launch System and continues to help plan for human exploration of asteroids, the moon, and Mars!

- Hands-on science activities and experiments
- Free lunch for the first 900 students

The deadline to receive artwork is Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at 10:00 p.m.
Students in grades 5 through 12 are invited to enter El Camino College's Onizuka Space Science Day Arts Contest. The contest winner will receive an invitation to bring three guests to meet and attend dinner with Astronaut Love on Friday, March 8, 2019.
Students are asked to create original artwork inspired by the theme: “The Future of Space Travel”
Accepted forms of artwork: drawing, painting, printmaking, computer-generated image, photograph or photographic collage. Art must be original – reproductions of other artwork are not accepted.
- Only new pieces of artwork inspired by the theme may be submitted
- Each entry must be the original work of one student only
- Students should give their artwork a unique title
- Include with the entry: student’s name, age, school currently attending, grade in school, home address, phone number, parent’s email, and teacher’s name
Please submit a digital photo or scan of the artwork as an attachment to firstname.lastname@example.org, or mail to El Camino College c/o Space Science Day, 16007 Crenshaw Blvd. Torrance, CA 90506.
All entries become the property of El Camino College and may be reproduced in print form, along with the identity of the winner, in our Space Science Day Event or Dinner Program.
