SLO - STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

This site is being developed to assist colleagues across campus in the development and assessment of Student Learning Outcomes at the institutional, program, and course levels. As we work together to develop SLOs we will be posting information, training materials, and resources on this site. Since these are working documents, we welcome your comments and suggestions.

Ongoing History of SLOs and Assessments at ECC

Developing Student Learning Outcomes and Assessments at El Camino College has been in progress since Fall, 2004.  Learn more about the ongoing progress on the Ongoing History page.

Current Activities:

Assessment of Learning Committee

On September 29th, 2006, the first formal meeting of the Assessment of Learning Committee took place in Library 202.  The committee is currently drafting College Core Competencies, developing working definitions of key terms, and designing forms for documenting student learning outcomes and assessments.

On the Assessment of Learning Committee page, you will find a list of committee members, a list of upcoming meeting times and links to past agendas and minutes.

Working Definitions

The Assessment of Learning Committee has developed working definitions of the following and other key terms: Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), Institutional Core Competencies, Programs, Assessments, Rubrics, Indirect and Direct Evidence.  Click here to view these definitions or to download a copy of these working definitions.

Current DRAFT of El Camino College Core Competencies

The Assessment of Learning Committee has developed a list of five core competencies, which will be reviewed and ratified by the Academic Senate in Spring 2007.  Click here to view the current draft of these competencies.

Instructional SLOs and Assessments

(Information to be posted soon)

Student Services and Community Advancement SLOs and Assessments

The Student Services page contains a snapshot of where they are in the process of articulating student-centered goals, student learning outcomes and assessments.  Check this page to track their progress.  Or, take a careful look at the hallways surrounding the student services offices.  The Student Services have taken an early lead in publicizing their student learning outcomes in the form of posters.  Look for them.

Resources and Training Materials

The Resources and Training Materials page contains a long list of links that can assist the interested reader in developing a deeper understanding of student learning outcomes and assessment.  One of the finest resources is from Bakersfield College - Assessing Student Learning in Higher Education.  This resource is so useful, we have a link to it here.

The Role of Accreditation in the SLO and Assessment Process

The new ACCJC accreditation standards adopted by the Accreditation Commission in 2002 require that all colleges develop Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) at the institutional, program, and course levels. An important goal of this process is to improve student learning across campus. More information will be posted soon.

Forms

The forms page contains forms that you and your colleagues may use to take stock of the assessments you already have in place in your course or program, and that you and your colleagues may use to submit assessment proposals to the SLO and Assessment Coordinators.  Click here to go to the forms page and download these forms.  After you fill them out, please submit them to the SLO and Assessment coordinators at: slo@elcamino.edu.

Progress Reports:

The progress report page contains reports of our progress to date.  These progress reports document progress made since Fall, 2006.  Click here to go to this page and download our progress reports.
