WHY THE FACILITIES BOND?
- El Camino College is an important resource for our community, preparing students for transfer to four-year universities and local residents for better jobs.
- El Camino College trains firefighters, police officers, teachers and health care professionals to serve our community.
- Many of El Camino College’s classrooms, laboratories and support buildings are 55 years old. They have been carefully maintained, but are aging and require repair and upgrades.
- Our community colleges are historically under-funded. State matching funds will not address urgent needs – and will be prioritized for communities with matching funds. If we do not raise local funds, state dollars will go to other communities.
- This is the first bond in El Camino College’s history. With interest rates at low levels, repairs and improvements will cost less now than in the future.
- Our classrooms need fire safety upgrades, alarm systems, emergency power and generators. Our Fire Academy needs an updated training structure and fire lines.
- Our labs need up-to-date instructional equipment and high-tech learning tools. Science classrooms, math/computer labs, and lecture halls require upgrades for internet access and new technology.
- We need to repair leaking roofs and decaying walls and ceilings. Health and safety repairs to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are urgently needed.
- Energy efficiency improvements will save College operating funds in future years.
- By law, all bond proceeds must be spent according to the Project List. A Citizens Oversight Committee will review audits and ensure funds are spent as promised to voters. No money can be spent on administrator’s salaries.
