Global Cultures Course

The Global Cultures Course is held in a shared virtual classroom with students and faculty from three other countries. This model was developed by Dr. Rosina C. Chia and Dr. Elmer Poe at East Carolina University (http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/globalinitiatives/course.cfm) and adapted by El Camino College in fall 2004.

ECC partners included Dnipropetrovsk National University in Ukraine, University of Modena at Reggio Emilia in Italy and Lebanese University in Beirut. In addition to lectures and discussions on topics such as family, cultural traditions, work and a meaning of life, the course provides students with direct personal experience with their international peers via real time video, chat, and daily emails.

Global Studies 101 – Introduction to Global Studies
(will be offered starting fall semester 2008)

This course offers a global introduction to world cultures. Students will be introduced to global cultures by examining the theoretical approaches to understanding cultures around the world in relation to the United States. Emphasis is placed on analyzing the origins of different cultures, how and why they change, and their impact on individuals and societies.

Note: This course is taught collaboratively with international partners and utilizes interactive web-based video as well as chat and email contact.
