Monday and Wednesday: 9:30 - 10:55 a.m.
Melissa Fujiwara

In Sociology 107- Race and Ethnicity in the U.S.- we explore the development of race as a modern day concept.  We examine how colonization shaped the historical development of systemic racism and racial inequality.  We will learn about racial ideologies and sociological systems of thought that help us to understand contemporary race relations and uneven racial outcomes.  Finally, through this class we will study how race is shaped by and shapes contemporary social institutions such as the criminal justice system, work, and the media.

As a learning community class, students will have the opportunity to study course content and overlapping themes from multiple perspectives and disciplinary angles (English and Sociology)

English 1A: Section 6424

Reading and Composition - People of Oceania in the U.S.
Monday and Wednesday: 11:45 a.m. - 1:50 p.m.
Christina Nagao

This course is designed to strengthen the students’ ability to read with understanding and discernment, to discuss the assigned readings intelligently, and to write clearly. Emphasis will be on writing essays in which each paragraph relates to a controlling idea, has an introduction and a conclusion, and contains primary and secondary support. College-level reading material will be assigned to provide the stimulus for class discussion and writing assignments, including a required research paper.

We will examine the historical as well as contemporary experiences of island peoples in the Pacific as well as in the United States.  Our readings address issues such as colonization, development, the diaspora, decolonization, and physical and mental wellness.  As we focus on the experiences of Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians, my hope is that you will learn a thing or two about yourself in the process!
