This summer, Kevin placed 5th in the USA Track and Field Championships 800m final in a new personal best 1:46.42 (placing him #26 in the 2006 world rankings).
The Women’s Team placed 2nd out of 7 represented programs.
Although a smaller meet in terms of teams and individuals, it was a very competitive “tri-meet” between winner LA Trade Tech (38pts) – last year’s 7th place team in Southern California; ourselves 2nd with 58; and Oxnard (61pts) – last year’s 13th place team in Southern California. Long Beach was 4th (81) and Santa Monica 5th (87) with LA Valley and Santa Ana no score.
Frosh Gabriela Rubi led El Camino with her 3rd place finish @ 20:58 with former high school LA City Section rivals Devorah Hernandez (LATT/LA H.S.) winning in 20:10 and Carolina Garcia (LATT/Garfield H.S.) 2nd in 20:44. Gaby was backed by her former high school teammates Kirsten Adams (6th in 21:04) and Megan Adams (12th in 21:49). Soph Yuriko Miyata followed Megan in 13th at 21:55 and frosh Flower Munguia our 5th today.
The Men’s Team placed 3rd out of 6 teams.
Like the women’s field, although smaller, it was a VERY competitive three-way race between ourselves (4th in the State last year), LA Trade Tech - the 2005 State Champions and Oxnard- 9th in the State last year! Today, LATT took the win with 32; Oxnard 2nd @ 41, ECC 3rd @ 50; LA Valley 4th @ 142; Long Beach 5th @ 144; and Santa Monica 6th @ 146.
With two very competitive meets in the approaching two weeks, our goal was to attempt to run as a tight, 10-man pack through the first 2-miles then begin to “open up” the 2nd half of the race. Right on command, at 2-miles soph Daniel Belay took off and started going after the leaders eventually placing 2nd in 22:08. Tightly-bunched behind him were 9th place soph Bryan Swartz (23:00); 10th place soph Dan Villanueva (23:02); and 11th place soph Francisco Delgado (23:05). Frosh Paul Brazeal (18th @ 23:42) held off a fast-closing soph Javier Figueroa (19th @ 23:43) for the 5th man spot. Others close were 22nd place frosh Louis Castro (24:02); soph John Guzman (24:04); frosh Bryan Camarillo @ 24:39; and frosh Kevin Moreno @ 24:49.
