A TRIBUTE TO RAYMOND SOUTHSTONE
2009 Hall of Fame Program
 The 22nd Annual El Camino College Hall of Fame is dedicated to co-founder Ray Southstone, who coordinated the event since its inception. He announced his retirement last year. It is through Ray’s hard work and commitment that the event has continued throughout the years.
Ray was one of the first students to enroll at El Camino College and went on to experience a number of "firsts" – he was a member of the college’s first student council, a member of the first football and track team, and was a member of the first graduating class at El Camino College.
He went on to Pepperdine College, and USC where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. Several years later, Ray was the only member of the college’s first graduating class to return as a faculty member, which he did in 1958 as track and cross country coach and instructor in biology and health. In 1962, his team was rated the best in the state and nation. Ray retired after 27 years as a professor of health science and athletics, but by 1987, he had returned to El Camino College to help start the Athletic Hall of Fame.
