Warriors Beat Mt. San Jacinto

The Warriors cruised to victory over Mount San Jacinto, 9-0, Wednesday at the El Camino College Tennis Courts. Chun Young-Shin won her No. 1 singles easily while Karin Endo needed three sets before prevailing in her No. 2 singles match.

Warriors Defeat Long Beach

TORRANCE, Calif. – The Warriors (7-1, 3-1) dropped just one set in their 9-0 South Coast Conference victory Tuesday afternoon at the El Camino College Tennis Courts. 

In the most competitive match of the day, Warriors No. 3 Karin Endo defeated her counterpart, Patricia Escalante, 3-6, 7-5, 10-6. The match lived up to expectations as both players faced off in a similarly close match when they met at Long Beach on Feb. 21. 

In the doubles half of the match, the No. 1 team of Chun Young Shin and Lindsay Guardado cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Warriors Open Conference Play With Loss To Mt. SAC

February 24, 2012

TORRANCE, Calif. – The Warriors made a valiant effort during the doubles portion of their South Coast Conference tennis match against Mount San Antonio, but it was not enough as they fell 5-4 Thursday at the El Camino College Tennis Courts. 

The Warriors (5-1, 1-1) came into the match having won five straight matches to open the season. They fell behind to the Mounties 4-2 after the singles half and needed to win all three doubles matches to keep their streak alive. Warriors No. 1 Chun Young Shin and No. 2 Lindsay Guardado each cruised in their singles matches, but the rest of the team could not muster another win. 

The Warriors were able to take two of the three doubles matches, but both came after the No. 3 team of Jessica Castile and Sara Carranza dropped their match in straight sets. 

The Warriors will take on Cerritos on the road on Feb. 28 in their next match.

Warriors Roll Past Irvine Valley

February 13, 2012

The Warriors match against Rio Hondo for Feb. 7 was postponed due to rain and has since been rescheduled for March 20 at Rio Hondo. 

On Feb. 9, the team travelled to Irvine Valley College where they defeated the Lasers 7-2. The women clinched the match in the singles half of the match, winning five of their six contests. They followed that up by taking two of the three doubles matches. Highlights included No. 2 Lindsay Guardado and No. 3 Karin Endo winning their matches in straight sets, and Jill Dineros scoring a dramatic three-set victory.

Warriors Rally For Comeback Win Over Fullerton

February 2, 2012

TORRANCE, Calif. – The El Camino College women’s tennis team got its season started on the right track as they rallied for a 5-4 victory over visiting Fullerton College Thursday at the ECC Tennis Courts. 

The Warriors (1-0) trailed 4-2 after the singles portion of the match after sophomore Fiat Tapaneeyakorn (Redondo Union) dropped a tough match against Monique Fitchett in a third-set tiebreaker, 10-7. 

That left the match in the hands of the doubles teams and they rose to the occasion. The No. 3 team of Jessica Castile (South Torrance) and Sara Carranza (Narbonne) were the first team to take care of business for the Warriors, taking down the team of Fitchett and Bianca Pulido, 6-2, 6-1. 

The No. 2 team of Karin Endo and Ashley Guerrero then gutted out a straight-set victory over Rachel Kronenfeld and Andrea Zavala, 7-6, 6-3. They concluded their match just before the No. 1 team of Chun Young Shin and Lindsay Guardado (Torrance) completed a miraculous comeback to seal the win for the Warriors. 

Shin and Guardado, already down a set, were up against it as they were down a break point 6-5 against Fullerton’s top team of Emma Sheehan and Victoria Vo. The Warriors duo broke Vo’s serve to even up the match and force a tiebreaker, but then fell behind 5-1 in the tiebreaker. That’s when Shin and Guardado dug deep and ran off six straight points courtesy of a few double faults coupled with outstanding hitting from the Warriors top tandem. In the third set tiebreaker, Shin and Guardado dominated and Guardado’s volley down the middle of the court sealed a dramatic comeback victory for the Warriors to cap off a grueling two-hour match. 

The Warriors will travel to Rio Hondo for their next match on Feb. 7.
