Two Warriors Tabbed All-Americans

The ITA announced the 2014 ITA All-America Teams for JUCO men's and women's tennis. The teams include a national team and California Junior College (CCCAA) team.

El Camino freshmen Shayla Fulton (Dorsey High) and Rose Sgolsutyatorn (RIS International) each earned All-American honors. Sgolsutyatorn was named an All-American in both singles and doubles and Fulton earned All-American honors in doubles.

Sgolsutyatorn was named the ITA Women's Rookie of the Junior for all California Junior Colleges and the South Coast Conference Player of the Year.

She was undefeated all year in singles until falling to Fulton in the SCC Championship. Sgolsutyatorn reached the State Singles Semifinals and also the doubles semis with Fulton.

Fulton was also undefeated in singles until the State Tournament where she reached the round of 16.

Warriors Finish Season At State Tournament

teamThe El Camino men's and women's tennis teams competed in the Individual State Tournament in Ojai over the weekend. Many individuals posted top performances.

Rose Sgolsutyatorn reached the semifinals in both singles and doubles with Shayla Fulton. Along the way in singles she earned a first-round bye, defeated Mia Hashimoto from Orange Coast College (6-1, 6-1), Alexis Mariano from Victor Valley (6-3, 6-2), Mary Ashmore from Santa Monica College (6-2, 6-3) and Annly Heinze from Riverside City College (6-0, 6-1). She fell to eventual singles champion Sophia Najera from San Diego Mesa (6-1, 3-6, 6-1).

In doubles, Sgolsutyatorn and Fulton fell in the semis to Sarah Anderson and Sarah Edward from Fullerton College, the doubles champions, 7-6 (2), 6-0. After a first-round bye they defeated Jessica Cox and Alyssa Mendoza from Reedley College (6-1, 6-2), Briana Bowers and Venezia Moyano from Riverside (6-4, 6-1), Laura Arruda and Leticia Dos Santos from College of the Desert (7-5, 7-5) and Kiana Hein and Kelsey Markle from Saddleback College (6-3, 7-6 (3)).

Fulton reached the Round of 16 in singles before falling to Remy Littrell from Palomar College (6-4, 5-7, 6-4). She earned a first-round bye and earned wins over Jacklyn Lee from De Anza College (6-0, 6-2) and Cori Beeby from Sierra College (6-1, 6-3).

Apurva Sharma reached the Round of 64 in singles but lost to Najah Simmons from Foothill, 7-5, 6-4.

Sharma and Kala James defeated Cassie Gomez and Tammy Tran from Cosumnes 6-1, 6-1 in round one of the doubles tournament before falling to Hali Dickson and Nikki Thornburg from Orange Coast College, 6-0, 6-3.

Jessica De la Torre and Chihiro Yamada teamed up in doubles and fell 6-1, 6-4 to Julia Golub and Arlesha-Marie Samuda from Chabot College.

Whitney Reed won his first-round match, 6-3, 6-4, over Vitor Ogassawara from College of the Desert but fell in the Round of 64, 6-3, 6-4 to Jakov Tshirkin from Fresno City College.

Anthony Ya also advanced to the Round of 64 defeating Roel Peralta from Chabot, 6-3, 6-3. He then fell to Zach Lidster, 6-1, 6-1, from College of the Desert.

Ya teamed up with Britton Henriksen in doubles to reach the Round of 32. They earned a first-round bye then defeated John Sharp and Kevin To of Santa Rose Junior College (6-1, 6-4). They then lost 7-6 (2), 6-2 to Pedro Carle and Zach Lidster from College of the Desert.

Chris Fisher and Calvin Hoo competed in the doubles tournament. They defeated Kyle Borges and Tyler King from Sierra College in round one, 6-3, 6-2 and fell in the second round to Gustavo Castro and Alan Lamas from Grossmont, 7-5, 6-0.

Sgolsutyatorn Named Rookie Of The Year

El Camino freshman Rose Sgolsutyatorn (RIS International School/Bangkok, Thailand) was named the ITA Women's Rookie Player of the Year for all California Junior Colleges.

Sgolsutyatorn went undefeated in the regular season in singles falling only to teammate Shayla Fulton in the South Coast Conference Tournament Championship.

She was also named the South Coast Conference Player of the Year earning wins over last year's state singles finalist and double champion, last year's state quarterfinalist and the 2013 UST/ITA Southern California Regional Singles Champion.

Fulton Wins SCC Singles Title

April 12, 2014


teamShayla Fulton defeated her own teammate, Rose Sgolsutyatorn, 6-3, 6-4, in the women's South Coast Conference singles championship at Cerritos College on Tuesday.

Sgolsutyatorn was named the South Coast Conference Player of the Year and head coach Steve Van Kanegan was named Coach of the Year.

The top eight finishers from each of the men's and women's singles and doubles brackets advanced to the State Tournament in Ojai in May.

Fulton and Sgolsutyatorn also advanced in doubles by winning the tournament, 8-0, over the No. 1 team from Cerritos.

Apurva Sharma advanced by winning in the Women's Singles Back Draw.

Sharma and Kala James advanced in doubles in the Women's Doubles Back Draw along with teammates Chihiro Yamada and Jessica De la Torre.

On the men's side, Anthony Ya and Whitney Reed each advanced in singles by reaching the quarterfinals.

Reed also advanced in doubles by reaching the quarterfinals with Chris Fisher and teammates Ya and Britton Henriksen reached the semifinals to advance.

Warriors Fall In SoCal Regionals First Round

teamThe El Camino women's tennis team earned the No. 6 seed in the SoCal Regional team tournament but fell 5-0 at No. 3 Fullerton College on Tuesday.

The loss ends the team season for the Warriors. Individuals from the men's and women's teams will compete at the South Coast Conference Championships beginning Thursday at Cerritos College.

Fulton Remains Undefeated In Singles

teamFreshman Shayla Fulton continued her streak in the Warriors (11-4, 8-2) 6-3 win over Long Beach City (2-9, 2-9) College on Tuesday. Fulton has won all 15 of her singles matches on the year at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. She also hasn't lost a doubles match since Feb. 13.

Fulton defeated Marianne Tieas 6-1, 6-1 and with Kala James defeated Tieas and Delores Cervantez in No. 1 doubles, 8-1.

The Warriors won all three doubles points as Apurva Sharma and Chihiro Yamada blanked Kailyn Ortiz and AnaMarie Cortez, 8-0.

Jessica De la Torre and Michelle Denkins in the No. 3 spot earned an 8-4 win over Judith Aguilar and Chiara Freedom.

Warriors Remain In Second Place With Win

The Warriors remain in second place in the South Coast Conference (10-4, 7-2) with a 6-3 win over Cerritos College (11-5, 6-4) in Norwalk, Calif., on Thursday.

El Camino won five of the six singles points and No. 1 doubles with Rose Sgolsutyatorn and Shayla Fulton defeating Samantha Judan and Rianne Ilagan, 8-1.

Sgolsutyatorn battled to three sets at No. 1 singled but pulled out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 victory over Judan.

Chihiro Yamada was also pushed to three sets but defeated Natali Perez, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Warriors Down Victor Valley 7-1

The El Camino women's tennis team (9-4, 6-2) remained in second place in the South Coast Conference with a 7-1 win over Victor Valley (0-10, 0-10) on Tuesday in Torrance, Calif.

teamThe Warriors only lost at No. 3 singles. Both the No. 1 doubles team of Shayla Fulton/Kala James and the No. 2 team of Chihiro Yamada/Jessica de la Torre won 8-1. Fulton easily won her singles match at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0.

Warriors Split Conference Matches

March 20, 2014

The El Camino women's tennis team went 1-1 on the week in two conference matches. On Tuesday the Warriors hosted Rio Hondo College and won in another tight match, 5-4. On Thursday they traveled to College of the Desert and fell 6-3.

The Warriors are now 8-4 overall and 5-2 in South Coast Conference play.

Against Rio Hondo the Warriors were strong at the first three singles slots winning each in straight sets with Rose Sgolsutyatorn, Shayla Fulton and Apurva Sharma. Kala James won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

James and Sharma also won at No. 1 doubles, 8-4.

Individual results for Thursday's match are currently unavailable but should be available on the ITA website next week.

Warriors Win Non-Conference Match 5-4

The women's tennis team won another 5-4 match on Thursday, this time, a non-conference victory at Riverside City College. The Warriors improved to 7-3 overall while Riverside fell to 7-6.

El Camino got wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles by two points. Shayla Fulton and Rose Sgolsutyatron won at No. 1 doubles 8-6 over Sheila James and Acacia Dettman.

At No. 3 doubles, Chihiro Yamada and Jessica De la Torre defeated Briana Bowers and Venezia Moyano, 9-7.

Sgolsutyatron defeated Annely Heinze at No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Fulton won at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-5, over Dettman. The final win for the Warriors came at No. 6 singles as De la Torre defeated Moyano, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6.

Warriors Win Third-Straight

The El Camino women's tennis team (6-3, 4-1) won its third match in a row on March 4 with a convincing 8-1 victory at home vs. Long Beach City College (1-4, 1-4) in South Coast Conference play.

The No. 2 doubles team of Apurva Sharma and Chihiro Yamada blanked AnaMarie Cortez and Kailyn Ortiz of LBCC, 8-0.

Shayla Fulton at No. 1 singles defeated her opponent, Delores Cervantez, in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Yamada also won her match at No. 4 singles in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

Women's Tennis Wins Two League Matches

Feb. 27, 2014

The El Camino women's tennis team won a hard-fought conference match, 5-4, against Cerritos College on Feb. 25 at ECC. The Warriors improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the South Coast Conference.

The Warriors also picked up a conference win on the week on Feb. 25 at Victor Valley, 9-0.

Against Cerritos, both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams came out victorious for El Camino. The No. 1 team of Shayla Fulton and Rose Panitnart Sgolsutyatorn finished first, 8-2. The No. 2 team of Kala James and Apurva Sharma won 8-6 in a closer match. The No. 3 doubles team of Chihiro Yamada and Uini Falevai was edged out, 9-8 (9-7).

In singles, the top three ranked singles matches went to El Camino while Cerritos took matches four-through-six. Sgolsutyatorn defeated Samantha Judan 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in No. 1 singles. Fulton won fairly easily over Stef Flores, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 and Sharma got the win at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-1 over Nina Pacquing.

The Warriors dominated the match at Victor Valley dropping set one set the entire match. The No. 1 doubles team of James/Sharma won 8-3 and the No. 2 doubles team, Yamada/Falevai, won 8-1. Victor Valley had to forfeit No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

In singles, Fulton took the No. 1 spot 6-7, 6-3 (10-3) over Alexis Mariano. Both the No. 2 singles match for Sharma and No. 3 singles match for James were easy 6-0, 6-0 wins. Michelle Denkins at No. 3 singles dropped the first set to Kimberly Gonzalez, 4-6, but rallied for a 6-2 (10-2) win. Jessa Capulong also earned a win at No. 5 singles over Sarah Yousef, 6-4, 6-3.
