TORRANCE, Calif. – The El Camino College women's tennis team opened the 2015 season at home on Tuesday, falling to Irvine Valley College, 6-3.
The reigning South Coast Conference Rookie of the Year and All-American, Rose Sgolsutyatorn (Thailand), returned for her sophomore campaign and earned a 6-1, 7-6 (10-6) No. 1 singles victory over Renee Walton.
ECC also got a singles win from freshman Jade Shugars (St. Mary Academy HS) at No. 4, defeating Marissa Woolsey, 3-6, 6-4 (10-5).
Another returner, Chihiro Yamada at No. 6 singles, won her match, 6-3, 3-6 (10-4) over Parmida Navabsafavi.
In doubles, Sgolsutyatorn and her new doubles partner, Shenae Shampine (Mojave HS) fell 8-3.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Donya Assef (Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) paired up with Shugars, falling 8-3 to Woolsey/Tiana Cung.
Yamada and freshman Shadera Woodland (Cabrillo HS) lost at No. 3 doubles, 8-4, to Ruth Chou/Navabsafavi.
The Warriors play at Cypress Thursday at 2 p.m.

TORRANCE, Calif. - The Fall ITA Southern California Tennis Championships were held at Cerritos College at the end of September and the El Camino College women's double team of Shayla Fulton and Rose Sgolsutyatorn won their draw. With the win, the two earned a spot at the National Small College Tennis Tournament that begins this week in Sumter, SC. However, the two will not be attending due to academic reasons.
Fulton and Sgolsutyatorn had great freshmen campaigns together in the spring of 2014 for the Warriors, advancing to the state tournament and winning the South Coast Conference title. Fulton earned an All-American honors in doubles and Sgolsutyatorn was named an All-American in both singles and doubles and the ITA Women's Rookie of the Year for California Junior Colleges.
In this tournament, Fulton and Sgolsutyatorn defeated Dettman/Cooksey from Riverside 8-6 in the championship match. Along the way, they also defeated Cornea/Singh from Cypress (8-2), Garcia/Sindle (Ventura) and Reynolds/Patton from Riverside City, 8-2.
In singles, Fulton fell to Laneshay Cooksey of Riverside City College in the semifinals (4-6, 7-5, 7-6). Jade Shugars also competed for the women, falling in her first match (6-0, 6-0) to Yannick Garcia of Ventura.
Sugars and Assef competed in the doubles main draw for the women, falling in their first round match, 8-5, to Dickson/Sampouw of Orange Coast College.
On the men's side, Josh Legardy competed in singles, falling to Hosep Orojian of Glendale (6-4, 6-4).
