Warriors Handed First SCC Loss

CERRITOS, Calif. – The ECC women's tennis team met its match on Thursday, falling at Cerritos 6-3.

The loss snapped ECC's (6-2-1, 2-1-1) seven match unbeaten streak.

The Warriors earned three wins in singles.

At No. 1 singles, Rose Sgolsutyatorn (Thailand) defeated Taylor Heath, 6-3, 6-3.

Donya Assef (Palos Verdes Peninsula) won her match at No. 5 singles, defeating Katia Brambila, 6-1, 6-1.

Chihiro Yamada (Japan) won at No. 6 singles over Merli Alcasid, 6-3, 6-2.

Warriors Continue Winning Ways

TORRANCE, Calif. – The ECC women's tennis team (6-1-1, 2-0-1) is unbeaten in its last seven matches with a 7-0 win at home vs. Victor Valley (0-4, 0-4) in South Coast Conference play Tuesday.

Not all matches were played as Victor Valley didn't field a full team.

The Warriors won all matches played in straight sets.

Warriors Sweep Conference Opener

Women's Tennis Improves To 4-1

TORRANCE, Calif. – The ECC women's tennis team (4-1) finished non-conference play with an 8-1 win over Orange Coast College on Thursday at El Camino College.

The Warriors won all six singles matches and at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Women's Tennis Defeats Fullerton

TORRANCE, Calif. – The El Camino College women's tennis team improved to 3-1 on the year with a convincing 9-0 win over Fullerton College (1-2) on Thursday at ECC.

Freshman Serina Rowland (Westchester HS) had the biggest comeback at No. 3 singles. She defeated Sabrina Formalejo, 2-6, 6-2, 12-10.

No. 5 singles player Donya Assef (Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) also had a difficult match, defeating Brenda Gollaz, 6-3, 7-5.

Warriors Win Second Straight

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – The ECC women's tennis team improved to 2-1 on the year with a 6-3 win at Santa Monica College on Tuesday.

The bottom of the lineup came up big for the Warriors.

No. 3 singles player Shenae Shampine won 6-1, 6-0. Jade Shugars won at No. 4, 7-6, 7-1.

At No. 5 singles, Donya Assef won her match, 6-2, 6-0. Chihiro Yamada won at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Shampine and Assef won at No. 2, 8-2. At No. 3, Shugars and Yamada easily won 8-0.

The three losses for ECC came at No. 1 doubles as Rose Sgolsutyatorn and Serina Rowland fell 8-4.

Sgolsutyatorn lost her first singles match of the year at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-1.

Rowland also lost in singles at No. 2, 6-1, 6-3.

The Warriors host Fullerton College on Thursday at 2 p.m.


Warriors Earn First Win Of 2015

CYPRESS, Calif. – The ECC women's tennis team (1-1) earned its first win of 2015, 6-3, at Cypress College on Thursday.

Sophomore Shenae Shampine (Mojave HS) at No. 2 singles made a great comeback after falling in the first set, 3-6, she won set two 6-4 and won 6-4 in set three to seal the point for the team.

Rose Sgolsutyatorn (Thailand) won at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2. The No. 5 singles player Donya Assef (Palos Verdes HS) won her match 6-0, 6-2.

Chihiro Yamada (Japan) also won a point at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles, Shampine and Assef won at No. 2, 8-4. Shugars and Yamada also won at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.

Sgolsutyatorn and Rowland lost at No. 1 doubles in a close match, 9-7.

No. 3 singles player Jade Shugars fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 and Serina Rowland at No. 4 lost 6-2, 6-2.


Warriors Drop 2015 Opener

TORRANCE, Calif. – The El Camino College women's tennis team opened the 2015 season at home on Tuesday, falling to Irvine Valley College, 6-3.

The reigning South Coast Conference Rookie of the Year and All-American, Rose Sgolsutyatorn (Thailand), returned for her sophomore campaign and earned a 6-1, 7-6 (10-6) No. 1 singles victory over Renee Walton.

ECC also got a singles win from freshman Jade Shugars (St. Mary Academy HS) at No. 4, defeating Marissa Woolsey, 3-6, 6-4 (10-5).

Another returner, Chihiro Yamada at No. 6 singles, won her match, 6-3, 3-6 (10-4) over Parmida Navabsafavi.

In doubles, Sgolsutyatorn and her new doubles partner, Shenae Shampine (Mojave HS) fell 8-3.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Donya Assef (Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) paired up with Shugars, falling 8-3 to Woolsey/Tiana Cung.

Yamada and freshman Shadera Woodland (Cabrillo HS) lost at No. 3 doubles, 8-4, to Ruth Chou/Navabsafavi.

The Warriors play at Cypress Thursday at 2 p.m.


Top Tennis Duo Wins Fall ITA Title

TORRANCE, Calif. - The Fall ITA Southern California Tennis Championships were held at Cerritos College at the end of September and the El Camino College women's double team of Shayla Fulton and Rose Sgolsutyatorn won their draw. With the win, the two earned a spot at the National Small College Tennis Tournament that begins this week in Sumter, SC. However, the two will not be attending due to academic reasons.

Fulton and Sgolsutyatorn had great freshmen campaigns together in the spring of 2014 for the Warriors, advancing to the state tournament and winning the South Coast Conference title. Fulton earned an All-American honors in doubles and Sgolsutyatorn was named an All-American in both singles and doubles and the ITA Women's Rookie of the Year for California Junior Colleges.

In this tournament, Fulton and Sgolsutyatorn defeated Dettman/Cooksey from Riverside 8-6 in the championship match. Along the way, they also defeated Cornea/Singh from Cypress (8-2), Garcia/Sindle (Ventura) and Reynolds/Patton from Riverside City, 8-2.

In singles, Fulton fell to Laneshay Cooksey of Riverside City College in the semifinals (4-6, 7-5, 7-6). Jade Shugars also competed for the women, falling in her first match (6-0, 6-0) to Yannick Garcia of Ventura.

Sugars and Assef competed in the doubles main draw for the women, falling in their first round match, 8-5, to Dickson/Sampouw of Orange Coast College.

On the men's side, Josh Legardy competed in singles, falling to Hosep Orojian of Glendale (6-4, 6-4).
