Welcome to the El Camino College NURSING PROGRAM
This program will prepare you for entry into the health care field as a registered nurse. The Nursing Program also offers advanced placement opportunities for LVN/LPNs and transfer students. The ECC Associate Degree in Nursing provides students with skills needed to enter the nursing profession and the ability to assess unique patients of any age in terms of their basic human needs and structural variables. Degree competence will be assessed regularly by evaluations of expected learning outcomes in the clinical setting as well as course examinations. Emphasis is placed on the use of critical thinking and creative problem-solving in the clinical setting. The nursing major prepares graduates to manage and provide skilled nursing care to individuals in a variety of health care settings as entry-level registered nurses. Upon successful completion of the nursing program, the graduate is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examinations for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
Program Length and Licensing Requirements.
The program is two academic years in length after completion of
program prerequisites. Acceptance of qualified applicants to the
program does not guarantee graduation from the program/college.
Students are eligible to take the licensing examination for
registered nurses upon satisfactory completion of the nursing
program. Graduates must pass the licensing examination (NCLEX-RN)
in order to practice nursing in the state of California. The
NCLEX-RN, developed by the National Council of State Boards of
Nursing, is administered by computer nationally, throughout the
year.

Special Note Regarding Licensure:
The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) protects the
public by screening applicants for licensure in order to identify
potentially unsafe practitioners. The BRN may deny applications for
permanent licensure, interim permits and temporary licenses if the
applicant has been found guilty of dishonesty; fraud or deceit;
felony; child abuse; sex offender crimes; acts involving narcotics,
dangerous drugs or devices; assault and/or battery; and other
crimes. Applicants who have questions regarding limitations related
to licensure should contact the California Board of Registered
Nursing (916) 322-3350 or access its website at www.rn.ca.gov. It
is the responsibility of the applicant to present sufficient
evidence of rehabilitation.
Applicants are advised to explore other career opportunities
prior to investing substantial time in a nursing program if it
appears that a prior serious act or conviction may jeopardize
licensure.
Department Update:
1. Challenge Exam for N149
Entrance: Effective fall 2010, all upward mobility
students (LVNs and transfer students) will be required to pass a
challenge exam prior to entering N149. The Challenge exam will be
based on the content from N150, N151, N152 and N153. Candidates
will have two opportunities to take the challenge exam. If students
fail the exam on the first attempt, they may retake the exam after
a period of one semester. If students fail the exam a second time,
they will not be considered eligible for the upward mobility
program and must apply to enter the generic ADN program under the
revised admission criteria.
2. Social Security Number: The state of California requires all RNs to have a valid social security number. Nursing students will be required to show proof of a valid social security number prior to entry into the nursing program.
3. N48 Dosage Calculations: Effective summer 2010, N48 Dosage Calculations will become a two unit class. N48 will become a Nursing Program requirement similar to N145. Students applying to the nursing program in fall 2010 must have N48 completed or in progress.
4. Multicriteria Admit Policy: Effective fall 2010, entrance to the generic ADN program will be based on a Multi-Criteria Screening Process approved in AB 1559 (Berryhill) (Chapter 712, Statutes of 2007 Public Postsecondary Education: Degree Nursing Programs, Section 78261.5). This law provides for a community college registered nursing program that determines the number of applicants to the program exceeds its capacity, to admit students using a multicriteria screening (MCS) process.
