STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Track & Field CHAMPIONSHIPS

Friday/Saturday May 21/22 @ Antelope Valley College

ECC's David Cardona STATE 5,000m meter CHAMPION

Freshman DAVID CARDONA wrapped-up a successful State Championships for El Camino College in winning a strategic 5,000m race at the end of the two-day meet! In steady 20-25 mph winds with gusts to 30, David had earlier placed a very close 2nd in the 1500 meters before returning later with added motivation to win. After running in a tight pack for 10 laps, Santa Barbara's So Cal Champion Stephen Scafford surged ahead with David on his shoulder. With one lap remaining, Scafford remained in the lead until David swung around for good with 150m remaining with his 60-second last lap. Arguably the strongest (state 5,000m leader) and fastest (49.5 400m speed) man in the field, the race set-up perfectly for David. This concluded a tremendous freshman season for David who finished the season with the State's best marks in both the 5,000m (14:45.15) and 1500m (3:54.29) – both marks ranking Nationally as well.

David’s performances, along with solid performances from our other men (below), helped put the Men’s Team into a very respectable 8th place in the Final 48-Team Field Standings!

5,000m State Champion!

Sophomore KAYC WHARTON concluded her outstanding career at ECC with a solid 4th place finish in the 400 Hurdles @ 66.11

Freshman JOSE LEZAMA placed a solid 5th in the 1500 meters after getting jostled around throughout the race. Had I had the opportunity to “re-coach” the race, I would have advised Jose to take-off and get away in the 2nd lap of the 3 ¾ lap race…..as one of the fastest (3:54.89/50.9) and strongest in the field (14:59), he may not have been caught…..of course, hindsight “provides new eyes….”

Going into the last 100m of the 1500m and everyone still there…

Freshman SHALE' GARLAND had a solid double placing 5th in the 400 meters @ 56.64 and returned later with a 7th place finish in the 200 meters @ 24.91.

Freshman JASON HARRELL placed 6th in the Discus with a throw of 166-8 which moves him up to 2nd on the El Camino Historical All-Time Top-10 performer List!

Freshman KARA KALMAR placed 5th in the Pole Vault after having a bit of difficulty with her approach as did other leading qualifiers due to the strong tail wind. She finished her freshman year with a new school-record of 11-1!

Freshman BEN WOODRUFF placed 5th in Friday's Javelin with his throw of 182-7 - a solid throw considering the strong side-winds that were having a significant negative impact on the flight of the javelin.

Sophomore SHAVETTE WILLIAMS placed 11th in the Triple Jump.

CSU Northridge Invitational

Saturday March 13th @ CSUN

El Camino track & field athletes fared VERY well amongst strong University teams from UCLA, USC, UC Irvine, CSU Northridge, Alaska Anchorage, and Pepperdine as well as community college rivals Mt. SAC, Glendale, and others.

  • Freshman  Jose Lezama @ 3:55.44 in the 1500m for 6th overall on the day and taking the state leader spot from teammate Cardona!

This is a good early-season sign for distance runners Cardona and Lezama who have only had four workout sessions on the track this season with most all work being “strength work” done thus far on the road!

El Camino, Mt. SAC, Cerritos, Pasadena, LA Southwest @ Long Beach City
Friday February 26th

Long Beach City College hosted a friendly - but very competitive - six-way South Coast Conference meet with many of the state's best competing (as always in our strong conference). Many athletes ran in their non-tradtional events in this early-season meet.

Freshmen DAVID CARDONA and JOSE "Tito" LEZAMA led an El Camino 1-2 sweep in a fast 3,000m race in 8:40.83 (comparable to 9:17 3200m or so) after a fast first mile in 4:37 (Jose 2nd in 8:41.16) shown here:

David (left) and Jose (right) in both shots

Freshman MERRY TULIKIHIHIFO (below) won the Shot Put at 40-1 1/2 placing her 10th on the ECC All-Time Performer List in that event.

Freshman BENJAMIN WOODRUFF (below) placed 2nd in the Javelin with a toss of 171-0 placing him 6th on the ECC All-Time Top 10 Performer List for the "new rule" javelin (1986-present). This is a 20 foot improvement from his last meet two weeks back!

Not to place any pressure on Ben, but he resembles a young Jon Rozborski - a young man that walked-on his freshman year at ECC, was new to the javelin and before he left earned State Titles and the ECC School-Record @ 212' before transferring to Chico State where he won the NCAA Title as one of USA's best and has a best throw of 232'!! Jon will be inducted into the ECC Athletic Hall-of-Fame this coming May!

Freshman SHALE GARLAND (below) returned after a "conditioning" 800 race to win the 200m in a personal best 24.97 and later followed with a blazing 55.6 1600m relay leg!

Freshman JOSE LEZAMA (below) had a solid day placing 2nd in the 1500m (4:03.02), 2nd in the 3,000m (8:41.16 above), and returned for a 52.2 split on the 1600m relay.

Freshman JOVAN BEASON (below) placed 2nd in the Shot Put with a big personal best of 46-3 1/2 as well as scoring well in the earlier Discus (139-1) and Javelin.

Sophomore REBECCA CARACOZA (below) earned personal bests in both the 1500m (5:04.60) and 800m (2:26.45).

Some of the best news this week was the return of KAYC WHARTON - one of last year's State's top 400 Hurdlers and 400m runners for El Camino- following an ankle fracture at the end of soccer season in late November!
above: last year's So Cal Finals

The El Camino College Track and Field Program is one of the most respected programs in the state.  Over the years, El Camino College teams have produced four State Track and Field Titles, 75 Individual Event and Relay State Titles, and six National Community College Records.  Along with a strong tradition of athletic accomplishments, the student-athlete transfer rate to four-year universities and colleges rivals that of any program in the state. Of special note is large number of El Camino Track and Field alumni currently coaching at high school programs throughout the southern California area.  Director Dean Lofgren - a two-time California Community College Track and Field Coach of the Year- and a knowledgeable coaching staff that boasts extensive experience at both the collegiate and national level, are very proud of the tradition they have maintained with mostly all local student-athletes.
