Testing information is available from the Assessment/Testing Center, SSC 217. All testing should be completed as soon as possible after you file your admission application. Read the Catalog descriptions of classes you plan to take early enough, so that you will be able to take care of any tests required. If you do not have your testing completed, you will not be able to enroll into those classes which require them. Placement testing for English, Math, and ESL is computerized and available on a drop–in basis in the Assessment/Testing Center, SSC 217, according to the above hours. Other tests, such as the Chemistry Placement are given on an appointment-basis only.
Overall assessment is based upon multiple measures, such as
academic skills,
discipline-specific tests, courses completed, grades, use of skills
at work, and work-
related training. Placement tests may not be used
alone, but are part of these
multiple measures considered prior to enrollment into
courses. Be sure to take
your testing results with you when you go for your
academic advisement or
educational planning session with a Counselor.
Note regarding ACT &
SAT Test Scores:
Neither ACT nor SAT scores are required for admission to El Camino
College. As well, although they may be used as part
of multiple
measures in the assessment process, individual scores may not be used at El Camino
for placement into English or Math courses.
TESTING OFFICE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME (SLO) #1 FOR
2009-2010:
"Students will learn how to take a more proactive role in preparing
themselves for participation in the assessment/testing process by
acquiring test review materials prior to testing."
It is the hope of the
Assessment/Testing Office that all students be able to do
as well as they can on the placement tests, so that they
will be relatively satisfied with their placement
results. We feel that the key to this is students simply
taking a bit of time to practice and review
beforehand--utilizing the sample test and testing information
sheets (available at the Testing Office) and also
by clicking on the Websites For Placement Test
Sample Questions link found below. With even a brief
review, students should feel more comfortable with the
test, place more accurately according to their true level, and
avoid wasting valuable time and money taking classes
that may not be needed. Even those students applying for
Financial Aid, who find that they must take an
Ability-To-Benefit Test in order to attain their Financial
Aid, can benefit with this kind of review, particularly in regard
to the practice and review of basic arithmetic
(adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing, fractions,
decimals, percentages, etc.).
Best of luck to all!
TESTING OFFICE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME (SLO) #2 FOR
2009-2010:
"Students will gain the knowledge of their strengths and direction
for improving their weaknesses by taking one or more diagnostic
tests in the ATB subject areas they do not pass, so that they may
better prepare themselves to pass the test in order to receive
their financial aid."
