Procedures For Repeating Tests at El Camino College

Please read first:  Most tests administered by the El Camino College Assessment/Testing Office may be repeated once (without written permission).  However, some cannot be repeated [Chemistry Placement Test, Contemporary Health Waiver Exam, Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) and the CNET Test].  Please see information below for specifics regarding the test you have in mind to repeat.  Requests to repeat a test for a second (final) time must be pre-approved by petitioning the appropriate Division Dean.  Petition forms are available from the Assessment/Testing Office.

BASIC GUIDELINES:

In order to improve your scores, obtain sample test information from the ECC Testing Web page (www.elcamino.edu/studentservices/co/assessmenttesting.asp) or from the Assessment/Testing Office.

Re-testing may not occur on the same day for systemic technical reasons.

Placements are based upon highest score received for each individual test.

There is no fee for repeating tests.

All placements are "Recommended".  If you have strong concerns about your final placement results, you should speak with your Counselor or the appropriate Division Dean.

PLACEMENT TESTS:

ENGLISH PLACEMENT:  Reading Comprehension
ENGLISH PLACEMENT:  Sentence Skills

Each of the two parts of the English Placement Test may be repeated once (without written permission) and for a second final time (by petition), provided that you have not already enrolled into nor completed any course(s) in that particular sequence (Reading or Writing).  For example, if you have already enrolled into or completed a Reading course at ECC, you may not repeat the Reading Comprehension Test.  (Courses may not be skipped by repeating the test.)  Petition forms are available from the Assessment/Testing Office.

MATH PLACEMENT:  Arithmetic
MATH PLACEMENT:  Elementary Algebra
MATH PLACEMENT:  College-Level Math

Each math test may be repeated once (without written permission) and for a second final time (by petition), provided that you have not already enrolled into nor completed any course(s) in the math sequence at El Camino College.  (Courses may not be skipped by repeating the test.)  Petition forms are available from the Assessment/Testing Office.

Please note:  If it has been two years since you last took the Math Placement Test, and you have not yet enrolled into an ECC math course, you may test again without having to petition the Math Division for permission.

(For Math Competency Test, see below under OTHER TESTS.)

ESL PLACEMENT:  Reading Skills
ESL PLACEMENT:  Writing Sample
ESL PLACEMENT:  Oral Interview

One or more parts of the ESL Assessment may be repeated upon the recommendation of the ESL Coordinator.  (Courses may not be skipped by repeating the test.)  Student should contact the ESL Coordinator directly for permission to re-test (petition not required).

CHEMISTRY:  Chemistry Placement Test

The Chemistry Placement Test may not be repeated.  A student may petition the Dean of Natural Sciences for re-consideration of course placement.  Petition forms are available from the Assessment/Testing Office.  Documentation in the form of previous course work (transcripts) must accompany the submitted petition.

ATB (Ability-To-Benefit) TESTS:

ACCUPLACER     [for native speakers of English]:

ACCUPLACER is the same test that is used for English and Math Placement at El Camino College.  However, when taken as an ATB Test, certain tests must be administered and completed on the same day.  If you have already taken it for placement purposes, please check with the Testing Staff to see if your previous test scores will satisfy ATB requirements.  For ATB purposes, ACCUPLACER may be taken once, and if not passed, may be repeated up to three more times.  (The third and fourth attempts have special requirements--see ATB Test -- Student Information for detailed instructions about repeating ACCUPLACER for ATB purposes.  (Available at the Assessment/Testing Office.)

CELSA (Combined English Language Skills Assessment)     [for non-native speakers of English]:

CELSA may be taken once, and if not passed, may be repeated up to three more times.  (The third and fourth attempts have special requirements--see ATB Test -- Student Information for detailed instructions about repeating CELSA for ATB purposes.  (Available at the Assessment/Testing Office.) After  completing the CELSA, students must subsequently enroll into ESL courses at El Camino College.

Please note:  All guidelines for repeating ATB Tests have been established by the U.S. Department of Education, not El Camino College.

OTHER TESTS:

CONTEMPORARY HEALTH:

The Contemporary Health Waiver Exam may be taken only once.  If a student does not pass the exam, a Contemporary Health course must be taken and completed to satisfy the graduation requirement.

MATH COMPETENCY (ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra Test):

Please note:  CALCULATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THIS TEST.

A student wishing to take this test must obtain a referral form from the Testing Office, which must be filled out and signed by a counselor before a test will be administered.  The Elementary Algebra exam is for students entering prior to Summer 2009 with CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT.  A minimum passing score of 70 is needed.  This is the same test as the one used for placement.  If this is the appropriate test for you to take, and you have taken it previously as a placement test and received a score of 70 or more, you may use those results for completion of the Math Competency requirement.  The Math Competency Test may be taken up to three times.  At least one week must transpire between the first and second testings, and the second and third testings.  Students are highly encouraged to review subject material before taking or re-taking the exam.  Test topics for the Elementary Algebra Test may be found on the Testing Web Page or obtained in person from the Testing Office.  For the third and final testing, a Petition form must be obtained from the Testing Office and taken to the Dean of Mathematical Sciences for his signature.  In addition to the Petition, documentation in the form of high school/college transcripts showing the student's academic background in algebra, must be attached as part of justification to repeat the test.  Moreover, a student may be asked to describe what they have done in preparation for re-testing.

MATH COMPETENCY (ACCUPLACER College-Level Math Test):

Please note:  CALCULATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THIS TEST.

A student wishing to take this test must obtain a referral form from the Testing Office, which must be filled out and signed by a counselor before a test will be administered.  The College-Level Math exam is for students who have enrolled Fall 2009 or later and for students who have NOT maintained CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT.  A minimum passing score of 63 is needed.  This is the same test as the one used for placement.  If this is the appropriate test for you to take, and you have taken it previously as a placement test and received a score of 63 or more, you may use those results for completion of the Math Competency requirement.  The Math Competency Test may be taken up to three times.  At least one week must transpire between the first and second testings, and the second and third testings.  Students are highly encouraged to review subject material before taking or re-taking the exam.  Test topics for the College-Level Math Test may be found on the Testing Web Page or obtained from the Testing Office.
