SUMMER 2009 - SOUTH AFRICA

 

Students had the opportunity to spend 19 days in South Africa and 2 days in Swaziland with an optional extension of 3 days in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and 2 days in Botswana.  The program leader was Professor Matt Ebiner.  Please visit his faculty page for more information

Places & Excursions:

  • Cape Town for 5 nights, the world's most beautifully located city
  • Watch African penguins in their native habitat at Boulders Beach
  • Venture underground amidst the stalactites of Cango Caves
  • Go wine-tasting in the world famous Cape Winelands
  • Absorb the Indian, Zulu, and beach culture of Durban
  • Travel along the spectacular coastline of South Africa's Garden Route, with several beautiful hiking options
  • Go on a walking safari in a primate sanctuary, with excellent viewing of native and introduced monkeys and lemurs
  • Stay overnight in Tsitsikamma National Park just steps away from the crashing surf of the Indian Ocean
  • Visit the home of Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela in the famous township of Soweto
  • Observe Johannesburg from atop Africa's tallest building (50 stories high)
  • Visit an ostrich farm to learn all about them, with the option to ride one!
  • Cruise by boat through St. Lucia Wetlands to see prolific bird life
  • Visit a traditional Zulu village to learn all about their culture
  • Experience Swazi culture and dance in Swaziland
  • See wildlife from an open vehicle in various parks and reserves:
  • Addo Elephant National Park with its great elephant herds
  • Hluhluwe Reserve, with the world's largest rhino population
  • Kruger National Park, one of the best wildlife parks in the world
  • DeWildt Conservation Centre, where cheetahs roam freely
  • Mlilwane Reserve in Swaziland, with an option to take a walking, mountain biking, or horseback safari

Cost:
$4590, includes airfare, 3-star hotels, excursions/activities, all breakfasts, some lunches & dinners, and private tour bus.  Air taxes/surcharges are extra (+$450).
