Max Alper - Constructions

Alper's "stack sculptures" are constructions and are all made of salvaged or recycled wood, cut and shaped as needed for the work. His purpose in using "waste" materials is twofold; one is a serious ecological concern, the other is more playful to see what can be done with things intercepted on the way to the landfill.

The "stack sculptures" start with a game familiar to any child who has played with blocks, trying to pile them high as possible before they toppleover. By using successively smaller forms plus internal reinforcement, the "stacks" are much higher and they develop a powerful visual thrust upward.
