Each year the El Camino College Art Gallery is proud to present a showcase of the current student body¹s artistic output. All of the works in this exhibition are selected as the best examples of student work being produced at the college. The Student Show includes a variety of art works fabricated in a wide range if media. The exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the educational and aesthetic philosophy advocated by the El Camino College Art Department and illustrates a diversity characteristic of the contemporary art world.
The majority of the works in the gallery are grounded in an academic approach to art study and training. represented in the exhibition are traditional two-dimensional painting media (oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, watercolor on paper) as well as drawing media on paper (graphite, charcoal, pastel and conte). Printmaking techniques include lithograph, etching and silk-screen print (serigraphy). The exhibition includes wonderful examples of familiar photographic processes (black and white silver prints and color printing). The computer design classes produced video animation as well as photo-based laser printed graphic designs and illustrative pieces. Additionally, the show includes a cross section of three dimensional techniques taught in the department - jewelry construction; plaster, latex and bronze cast sculpture; clay sculpture; wheel thrown and slab-constructed clay vessels and hand-built objects as well as a variety of imaginative mixed media constructions and site specific installation. The annual Student Show may be characterized by an energy and vitality unique to emerging artists. The El Camino College Art Department provides a broad array of learning opportunities in various media. Classes offered by the Art Department include drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, printmaking, digital media, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, illustration, color theory, design, print making and bronze casting. - Susanna Meiers
