Fall 2012

Korea

Monday, September 10, 2012 at 3 pm & 7:30 pm
KOREA TODAY
Buddy Hatton, narrator

With over 10 million people, a figure that doubles if you include neighboring cities and suburbs, Seoul is the largest city in South Korea and unquestionably the economic, political and cultural hub of the country. By some measures it is the second largest urban agglomeration on the planet, after Tokyo. Situated between Shanghai and Tokyo and bordered by the impenetrable North Korea to the north, the South Korean capital is sometimes overlooked by American travelers but Seoul is an exciting location in its own right, and incredibly safe. With beautiful palaces, great food and a shopping nightlife, Seoul is an exciting way to experience the Asia of old and new. Veterans from the “Korea war” will not recognize what they remember from that time in the mid 50's. The American and ally bases are now all modern cities. The barracks are gone and in their place, new high-rises.

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED,
HUNGER FOR THE HOLY LAND

Brandon Trones, narrator

Using guerilla filmmaking techniques and a lot of guts, Brandon proved himself with his faith based, feature adventure-documentary: “The Road Less Traveled: Hunger for the Holy Land”. For the first time, he gave the audience an up close and personal look at the holy shrines, relics, and locations of the Middle East. Brandon was able to go where no film crew has ever gone before and taken video cameras into places where recording devices are strictly forbidden.

Italian Lakes

Monday, November 5, 2012 at 3 pm & 7:30 pm
ITALIAN LAKES ADVENTURE
Stan Walsh, narrator

So magical is the scenery of Italy’s lake district that Leonardo da Vinci chose it for the background of the Mona Lisa.  English poet Shelley, in 1818, describes Lake Como as a “long, narrow lake that seems like an immense river flowing between the mountains and the forest." The lakes are long crevices that glaciers carved into the Alps.  Fed by melting snows the lakes lead to historic Alpine passes, Brenner, St Goddard.  We visit Lake Como, Maggiore and Garda. Lake Maggiore is one of Italy's most coveted retreats, where elegant "Bella Époque" hotels mingle with shoreline villas.  The region was popular in Roman times, later it was chosen as a vacation destination by the nobility of Milan. From star-studded Stresa we visit Isola Bella, the Boromeo palace and garden and dine on nearby Isola dei Pescatori  ( Fisherman's Island). On Lake Como, we'll ferry hop from town to town.  From Bellagio “Pearl of the Lake” to Varenna on the eastern, quiet side, of the lake.  Silk weaving, first by hand then by machine, forms the economic base for the town of Como. Lake Garda is the crossroads of three fascinating regions: Veneto, Lombardy and Trentino/Adige  or South Tyrol Sirminoe's Scaligero castle provides a trace of history for Lake Garda. The lake is endowed with weather suitable for lemon groves.  We explore beyond Riva along the headwaters of the Sarca and Adige Rivers into Trentino/Alto Adige  to Trento and Bolzano to visit “Otzi” the 5000 year old “Iceman”. On the lake we visit Limone, Malcesine and Lazise. To the south we visit Cremona on the Lombard plain, home of the most famous violin in the world, the Stradivarius.  Today it continues to be the center of production of stringed instruments.  We were fortunate to meet a young violinmaker who discusses and demonstrates his art.

Wales

Monday, November 19, 2012 at 3 pm & 7:30 pm
WALES: LAND OF SONG
Monty Brown, narrator

A musical look at one of the most overlooked, yet romantic and spectacular countries of the world: “Wales: Land of Song.” Wales may be overlooked because it is thought of as an extension of England (don't tell that to a Welshman), but it features more castles than any other country, and spectacular ones, at that. It's also, we discovered, a land of mellifluous language, stunning scenery, 3 million people, and 10 million sheep. There are three and one half sheep for every person. Cardiff and the SouthEast: a tour around the capital, which is reorganizing itself to be a world capital, rather than a port for exporting loot wrenched from the bowels of Mother Wales. Down by the harbor there is a complex of new buildings, including the Welsh National Assembly and the Millenium Centre. In the middle of town, coffee shops, outdoor cafes, and places to drink your Brains (brand of beer). Nearby Cardiff, we visit the wacky world of Groggs in Pontypridd (Tom Jones's birthplace) to check on the ceramic figures, mostly rugby players, created by John Hughes and his son Richard. Of course, everywhere in Wales you'll find Tom Jones's birthplace. Maybe not THE Tom Jones of “Delilah,” fame, but many other Tom Joneses. Castles at Caldicot (where there's a male voice choir), Chepstow and Raglan. See Monmouth with its unique Monnow Bridge ; the evocative ruins at Tintern Abbey; the Roman amphitheater at Caerleon; the Transporter Bridge in Newport (well, it’s not working right now, but hopefully it will be soon). Go south to Lavernock Point, where Marconi sent his first over-the-sea wireless signals via Flatholm Island; and Caerphilly, the town, the cheese and the castle and Ty Castell, a B&B where we view the assembly of a big British breakfast

CUBA: THE INSIDE STORY
Karin Muller, narrator

There’s a side of Cuba you’ve seen before, and a side that you have not. For years Karin Muller has heard people arguing over Cuba. Some say it’s a tropical paradise, filled with healthy, happy people. Others - a police state where almost everyone is trying to escape. So Karin decided to go there for three months – undercover – and find the truth out for herself. The answer was not what she expected - and it all started with the local pizza joint. Amazingly the Cuban people have fascinating personalities – funny, creative, patient, friendly, ingenious. Karen concludes that no matter what the countries politics or economics are - they’re our neighbors. It’s been fifty years, isn’t it time we started talking again?
