New Entrepreneur Training Program Now Available in Carson!
As part of the Small Business Mentor Protege Program offered in conjunction with the City of Carson, the SBDC will offer NxLevel Training at the Carson Community Center, 801 E. Carson St., Carson, on Saturdays starting May 31, 2008. If you're interested in starting a business, the 10-week NxLevel Entrepreneur Training program can help you get off on the right foot. To give you an idea of the effectiveness of NxLevel Training, a survey conducted by the University of Calgary shows that 40 percent of participants start a business within one year of completing the course. Another 20 percent continue to work on developing their business concept. When surveyed after three years, over 93 percent of the businesses were still in operation, whereas the national average was a mere 16.5 percent for the same time period.
The cost of the program is $199 and includes all materials. The cost may be tax deductible so check with your tax advisor. Check the SBDC workshop schedule for a course description and details. The Carson NxLevel series runs from May 31, 2008 - August 9, 2008 (no class on Saturday, July 5, 2008). Call the SBDC at 310.973.3177 for more information and to register. Registration is not available at the workshop.

New California Construction Contracting Program is Here!
The California Construction Contracting Program (CCCP) is a cost-free program designed to increase the number of Disadvantage Business Enterprises (DBE) that bid on Caltrans projects. This program is provided to DBEs through a partnership between the El Camino College - Small Business Development Center (ECC-SBDC) and Caltrans.
CCCP exists because over the last few years, the number of small businesses bidding on California Department of Transportation/Caltrans projects has decreased. This program is designed to provide technical assistance and training to disadvantaged businesses that focus on highway construction management. CCCP will provide both technical training and business development assistance to Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs).
LA County Office of Small Business Assistance
The Los Angeles County Office of Small Business (OSB) is a source of information on procurement opportunities, certification, financing, and technical assistance. OSB also serves as the County Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), funded by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to help small businesses get contracts with prime defense contractors.
OSB provides links to web sites which contain information such as license and permits required when starting a business, upcoming events, and how to register to be a County, State, and Federal vendor.
OSB provides links to procurement web sites, not only with the 37 County departments, but also with the federal and state governments, cities and other public jurisdictions.
OSB provides workshops and training for businesses on how to sell goods and services to the County, the State, the federal government, and other public agencies in Southern California.
