Course & Classroom Policies:

Academic Honesty

Students are expected to do their own work at all times in this class.  Plagiarism or any form of cheating is of the highest offense in academic endeavors, and will not be tolerated whatsoever.  Any student caught plagiarizing and/or cheating in any manner will be dropped from the class and a grade of F will be issued for the course.

Attendance & Participation

If you enroll in a class and you do not attend the first scheduled meeting of the class, you may be dropped from the roster and your place may be given to a waiting student.

Regular attendance is expected of every student. A student may be dropped from class when absences from class exceed the number of units assigned to the course. This rule also applies to excessive absences due to illness or medical treatment. The student who has been absent due to illness or medical appointment must explain the absence directly to the instructor. The student who has been absent due to a communicable disease or quarantine must report directly to the Health Center for clearance before returning to classes.

One of the most important things you can do to succeed in this class is to attend every class session.  A lot of the learning that will happen in this class takes place in the classroom.  It’s hard for me to teach you when you’re not here.  Please adjust your schedule accordingly so that you are in attendance at every class session.

My definition of participation is:

  1. You attend each class session, including arriving on time and staying until I dismiss you.
  2. You come to each class session having read the required materials & assignments beforehand.
  3. You ask thought-provoking questions and make comments in class that demonstrate your ability to think critically about the subject matter.
  4. You are prepared to answer questions when called upon.
  5. You fully engage in any group-based assignments/activities given, whether in the classroom or outside of the classroom.

Classroom Behavior

As your professor, I try to create a very collaborative, open environment where optimal learning can be achieved.  In order to do this successfully, I request that your behavior be commensurate with college level academics.  You are accountable for your behavior in the classroom.  I will treat you with the utmost respect that you deserve, and I humbly request that you reciprocate that back to me and to your fellow classmates.  All communication (verbal and non-verbal) in the classroom must be professional at all times.  This means that any off-color comments, jokes of poor taste, profanity, gender-biased remarks, etc. will not be tolerated.

Of course, debate and discussion are part of a good learning environment, and you are encouraged to make your position and viewpoints known as long as you stay within compliance of classroom policies.

Cell Phones

The use of cell phones is prohibited during class sessions.  If you bring your cell phone into class, please be sure to turn the ringer to vibrate.  I prefer phones to be off during class session; however, I understand that sometimes the situation calls for you to be reachable.  If you must take an emergency call during class, please do so outside of the classroom so as not to disturb your classmates.  If you leave the classroom too often to answer your phone, I reserve the right to adjust your participation grade accordingly.

Absolutely no texting during class.  Doing so will have an adverse affect on your participation grade, and generally makes me grouchy.

Please note: I have been known to occasionally answer students’ cell phones that ring during class session.  The best advice I can give you is to keep your phone off and out of my reach.

Laptops in the Classroom

Although technology is a vital part of our society, and, in many cases, the learning environment today, I request that you do not use laptops in the classroom unless given specific permission to do so. In the past I have allowed students to use their laptops; however, I have found that it becomes a distraction in the classroom.

Please refer to the school’s catalog for additional policies regarding student behavior and academic performance standards at El Camino College.

Students with Disabilities

Please consult the 2010-2011 El Camino College catalog (p. 20-21) for information about the school's policy regarding students with disabilities. Information can also be found at the school's Special Resource Center webpage.

Syllabus:

Course Description

In this course students examine human relations theories and applications that will promote effective work relationships in a multicultural workplace.  Ethical issues in business are addressed as well as an explicit process of ethical reasoning that will aid in defining and dealing with dilemmas in the workplace.  Current events and case studies will be used to develop critical skills as students apply theories and principles.

Course Objectives and Methods of Evaluation

  1. Evaluate interacting variables that occur in human behavior, such as motivations, perceptions, frustrations, psychological conflicts, attitudes and values.
  2. Analyze workplace organizational structures and communication networks
  3. Evaluate the techniques and dynamics of conducting multicultural group meetings.
  4. Compare and contrast the theories of popular behavioral scientists, such as A.H. Maslow, Frederich Herzberg, Douglas McGregor, William Ouchi, David McClelland, and W. Edwards Deming.
  5. Compare and contrast various leadership styles in the development of employee empowerment, team building, and change management.
  6. Differentiate between the various employee counseling methods.

Examinations

There will be four quizzes during the course of this semester – one about every three or four chapters.  These quizzes may be cumulative.  Depending on how the class performs during the semester, I may consider allowing students to use notes on one or two of the quizzes.  The quizzes generally consist of multiple choice, true/false, and fill-in-the-blank questions.  Each student will need to have a Scantron (#882e) sheet on quiz day.  Scantron sheets can be purchased at the ECC bookstore. There are no make-ups for missed quizzes.

Homework

Students will be required to complete and turn in homework weekly.  The homework assignments generally consist of writing short papers (2-3 pages) that are based on the students' various experiences and perspectives.  These assignments will require much introspection, and may also involve completing a short self-assessment exercise prior to writing the paper. All homework assignments must by typed (double-spaced, 12 pt. font), stapled, and turned in on time.  Late homework is not accepted. Emailed homework is not accepted.

Some assignments will be completed during class time.  If you are not in class, you will not receive credit for the work.  No make-up work will be provided.

Course Project

There will be a team-based research project required for this course.  Details of the course project will be discussed during week 5 of the class.  Full participation in the group project is mandatory for all students.
