Enrollment

1.  Q: How do I enroll at El Camino College (ECC)?

A: You must first register with the college. You will need to obtain a college identification number (ID) to get into the class www.elcamino.edu. Go to the college web site. The instructor has no control over the college enrollment process, application process or registration.

2.      Q:  How do I register for an ECC class?
A:  Go online to
www.elcamino.edu, click on MyECC registration appointment time.  Students may not register prior to the assigned date and time.  You will be given clear, easy to follow, step b y step instructions.  Computers are available for students use in the Library Media Technology Center, Library East Wing Basement.

3.      Q: The class is already full. I think I am on a “Waitlist.” How do I get into the class?

A:  You need to obtain an “add” slip, signed by the instructor, and take that to the Student Service Center/Admissions to get put into the computer. An “add” slip may be obtained from the Business Division Office or from the Instructor. Check the instructor’s teaching schedule in the “Schedule of Classes” to find the day, time and room location to get the add slip signed. You cannot add if the class is full.

4.  Q: Can I take concurrent real estate courses while taking the Principles course?

A: Absolutely! There is no prerequisite. However, do you have the time to complete all the work? Students often take one, two or even three real estate courses, but do not usually complete them if they also have a house full of people and a job with lots of hours. It is recommended to have proficiency in Principles BEFORE taking on a lot more information, if you are not already familiar with real estate language, math and practices.

5.   Q: How do I “ADD” the class?

A: If the class is not full, obtain an “add” slip, signed by the instructor, and take that to the Student Service Center/Admissions to get put into the computer. An “add” slip may be obtained from the Business Division Office or from the Instructor. Check the instructor’s teaching schedule in the “Schedule of Classes” to find the day, time and room location to get the add slip signed.

6.  Q: How do I “DROP” the class?

A: It is the student’s responsibility to officially “drop” the class through the records office or expect to receive a letter grade for the class, which may be an “F” if the coursework is not completed. You must complete the Final Exam and Course Project to receive a passing grade for the course.

7.  Q: How do I know if I got into the class or not?

A: Go to MYECC and put in your student ID number to see the class schedule for current enrollment, and, to see the amount of money you may owe, and to see your final grade for the course, etc.

8.  Q.  What registration or ECC fees should I expect?

A:  Expect the ECC Health Services Fee, Student Representation Fees, possibly a parking fee and the enrollment fee.  All frees are posted on the ECC web page and may be found in the “Schedule of Classes”  Extra fees, if applicable, may include out of state, out of country of Student Visa fees.  Check out the ASB Student Discount Sticker for sports, events, movies, theme parks and similar lower prices.

9.   Q:  Can I “audit” the real estate course?
A:  No.  The ECC website,
www.elcamino.edu/admissions/creditasp lists information about courses that you may audit.  No real estate course at ECC is currently approved for “audit” enrollment.  The student must obtain and complete an”audit course” form and may not commence prior to the second week of class.

10. Q:  May I test out for a real estate course?
A:  No.  A list of approved courses that you may take “credit by examination” is available at the various campus division offices and is not granted until after completion of 12 semester units with minimum GPA of 2.0

Before Class Begins

1.  Q: Will the instructor send me the information I need for this class?

A: No. The instructor will not contact you. Go to the instructor home page (elcamino.edu/faculty/dgrogan) to get the information you need to begin.

2.  Q: What should I do before class begins?

A: For online classes, read the “Student Handbook for Online Courses” or similar college instructions. For live on-campus classes, read the Syllabus and have your bookstore materials by the first class meeting.

3.  Q: The ECC “Schedule of Classes” instructs me to contact the instructor PRIOR to the beginning of school, so I am. Is this all I do?

A: Yes. The instructor will not return from out of state until the weekend just prior to the first week of school. Do not expect communications prior to the first day of the semester.  See before class begins question #1.

4.  Q: Can I get started before the semester begins?

A: Probably. Go to the instructor’s web site:  elcamino.edu/faculty/dgrogan read the “General Information” and the information for the specific class number and class name. (Example: RE11 Principles).  The SYLLLABUS and other materials are found at this site.

Online Course

1.   Q: I am taking one of your online classes and one of your live, on campus classes? What’s the difference?

A: Both may have online textbooks; or, one may have a standard college textbook. All class instructors are found on the instructor home page (elcamino.edu/faculty/dgrogan). The live class will have more interaction and you will benefit from questions and dialogue asked by fellow students. Networking, mentoring and group study may be easier to arrange and more beneficial in the live class.

The ability to do homework 24/7 in jammies appeals to many people mentally, IF they have the ability to be self-motivating to actually get the work done, on time.

2.   Q: Will there be ANY on campus meeting for this class?

A: Yes, if the section is a live, on-campus course.

No, if the section is an online course.  The entire class is either accessed via the Internet or communications by phone or mail.

3.  Q: Is there an orientation for the online-only class?

A: No. On campus classes meet during the regularly scheduled time as per the “Schedule of Classes” where the class information, including the web site, are discussed. For online courses, there is no orientation other than the information found on the faculty home page.

RE License

1.  Q: How do I get a real estate license?

A: Complete the required courses, pass the state exam, pay the fees, and get “live scan” fingerprints (offered by El Camino police department). All the information is found in the materials taught in the required Real Estate Principles course and the Real Estate Practice course.  The course materials covering this information may also be found at www.dre.ca.gov for broker or salesperson license or at www.orea.ca.gov for appraisal license.

2.  Q: Is it expensive to get a real estate license?

A: Actually, compared to similar careers with similar earnings, the real estate field is fairly inexpensive to enter. The most expensive class is usually Real Estate Principles—the entry-level course, because you need to obtain materials that you will use for your other courses, such as a REAL ESTATE Financial Calculator, a real estate dictionary or Vocabulary of Real Estate, perhaps some help with real estate math tutoring such as the bookstore “Real Estate Math” materials, plus regular college expenses for the class enrollment, plus the textbook materials. After you have adequate supplies, most classes require just the textbook, online access or a student study guide. The state exam is about $25 for real estate salesperson license; about $1,000 for a licensed appraiser. All this information is found in the Real Estate Principles and Real Estate Practice course materials.

Coursework

1.  Q: Can you tell me what books and materials I need to get and where to get them?

A: “Course materials” and “Syllabus” are found on the instructor home page (elcamino.edu/faculty/dgrogan). The El Camino Bookstore has the supplies.  The bookstore shelves are arranged by class name and by the name of the instructor.  You may need an 882 scantron packet for this class.

2.  Q: Can you tell me how the course works?

A: Some courses use WebCT, or BlackBoard, or Etudes, or something else. This course uses the college’s faculty web page elcamino.edu/faculty/dgrogan for the syllabus, assignments, due dates, etc. The textbook may be an online provider that uses publisher software. You do not need any previous knowledge or experience with online courses. You do need a password if the textbook is with an online publisher.  To access the class you need to purchase the “bundled” text book that has a unique user ID#.  Then you go online at the publishers website, enter the ID# and complete the registration information.  Then you can log in to the course.

3.  Q: How do I know if you got my chapter quiz from the Rockwell online book?

A: Do NOT hit “Submit” until you finish the entire course. When you finish one chapter, your online grade is posted so that you can see your score. I see the same. You do not need to send me your grade or do anything else except go on to the next chapter.

4.  Q: Do I have to complete all the “chapter challenge exercises” before taking the chapter quiz? You aren’t grading the challenge exercise for points, so why both?

A: You cannot take the Final Exam until you finish ALL chapter quizzes. You cannot take the Midterm until you finish the previous chapter quizzes. You cannot take a chapter quiz until you complete the challenge exercise for that chapter, which includes fill-in-the-blank or similar type of information. You cannot rush the learning process and jump to the answer. Remember that some innocent “public” (or even yourself) is counting on you being knowledgeable to help them in a real estate transaction. They are NOT looking for someone who memorized some answers to the state exam but don’t know anything. The reason so many licensed agents will be losing their license (maybe with jail time and fine$) is because they do not have adequate knowledge in a real estate transaction (loan fraud, predatory lending, improper knowledge of appraisal market price, etc.).

5.  Q: How do I know what is due, when?

A: Look at BOTH the instructor home page “Calendar” and the course “Syllabus.”

6.  Q: What happens if I turn in work late?

A: Read the Instructor policy and the syllabus found on the faculty home page. Late work is one-half credit, if accepted. The postmark on the mailing envelope is the date used, not the date the work is received, if mailed. No email assignments are allowed unless specifically instructed in a particular assignment.

7.  Q:  How do I get work returned to me?
A:  If you are in an on-campus course, materials are returned during the next week’s live class.  If you are taking an online course, you are to provide an 8 ½ x 11 self addressed envelope with $3 postage affixed so the instructor can mail your work back to you after.
